You have never had a full-time team in BBS - what inspires you to run this league day in and day out?
Its hard sometimes, especially when activity is down. Mostly I just really like it as my main hobby. I think everyone needs something to take them away from real life. I do some reading, I watch a lot of movies, and I try to stay active and go out but my main thing away from work is BBS. It is a release and a relaxing time away from the daily grind.
What was your original intention with these players:
Ricardinho - probably the biggest top overall bust ever
Bobby Hill - what was his original potential? Are you surprised he's had the longevity he has had?
Ricardinho was supposed to be okay, but his ratings were kinda odd and it didn't translate well. I'm pretty sure I wanted that draft to be a down draft. I put some guys in that had high potential, but it was just a mixed up draft where nothing was certain. Sometimes those are fun. More realistic when the drafts are like now and again.
Bobby Hill had like 25 potential. Maybe even 0. It was pretty low, and yes Im shocked at how well hes simmed and how long and productive his career has been. He also had extremely low handles throughout his career. I think if he had been a top option throughout his career the TOs would've been more of a problem. Most GMs used him correctly and really maximized his potential. I still think there are a ton of players that have been used incorrectly throughout BBS.
Which players did you expect to break out into all-stars that ended up being middle of the road?
I thought Osumane Sembene would be special. I loved his defense, and I thought his offense would be good enough for him to become elite. Instead his offense always held him back. Even at his peak he wasn't highly regarded.
Diego Alvarez I thought would be All-World. I really expected him to be a 30-10 guy and be someone that was a top option guy even with his defensive short comings. Alvarez was a big disappointment.
Dmitri Maximov has had a very good career, but I expected him to be a super stud that could lead his team single-handedly. I just thought hed be a super offensive player that could dominate from any spot. He developed into a guy that could only really produce well at PG.
Which players' careers have surprised you the most?
JP Breezey tops this list. I started him with 100 potential, and his ratings weren't far behind DellJuan Pearson. Breezey is not Pearson. I actually thought they'd have similar careers.
Skyler Hampton was supposed to be an elite wing. And he got their pretty quick, but then just died. Mark killed him. Not sure how he did it, but he did.
Sigmund Weissmuller was the same way. Really thought he would be All-League for a decade and he just fell apart. Mightve been cause Washington had so many talented wings.
Jackie Skoals also never really developed into what I thought he would. He's a solid PG, but I thought he'd be a 20-10 guy.
How do you decide who will be a stud and who won't?
Now its based loosely on real life, and mostly on what the league needs. I try to make PG's and big men rare. Try and make wings abundant. I think its makes it hard to win when you cant always have a traditional lineup. When the draftees were GM created I based it on a combination of story line and what the league needed. I couldn't make everyone as good as the GMs wanted obviously.
Have you ever met a sim league GM in person?
Brian who was in the original BBS will be in my weddding. Hes a good friend of mine.
Manas is someone Ive known for probably 5 years? Not sure, its been awhile.
Matt came into my work on his trip to California.
What has made the BBS so special compared to other leagues?
I think we do a good job of combining a very good league with some extremely silly post padding threads. I think we were also able to capitalize on the demise of the NBN. I think lots of Gms were kinda left reeling as the NBN started to spiral downward and they were able to throw themselves into BBS.
What is your biggest regret as commissioner?
Rehiring Dave was a mistake. He was pretty bad when he came back. The college league was pointless. Probably some other stuff Im forgetting about but those are the 2 that jump to mind.
Do you wish that there was a new FBB or if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Yes. I think expansion and new features would boost interest and create new GMs throughout the country. its kinda dead as far as new guys wanting to come in and be good. And I also think lots of guys are bored with the sim engine and put off by the flaws FBB has.
What are your future aspirations and vision for BBS?
Its been so inactive of late Im considering simming faster so we get into the late 70's and early 80's faster. I think activity will spike when we get guys that have more name value for GMs.
