Yah, I love the city, but of the three times I've been there, I went first with my family, then with my dad, my best mate and his dad, and then again with family, and I was pretty young.
My gf's never been to the States and we skipped over going on holiday this year to save up a bit and go on a proper holiday to New York next year just after Easter... around the beginning of May. Usually we go on crappy budget holidays to Europe because it's cheap lol, can usually get flights to somewhere nice in Europe with 3 or 4 nights in a 4 star hotel for around £600 (around $1,000) for the two of us. Then again that's going on like Ryan Air or easyJet... horrible planes lol.
Anywho, for the NYC trip, we've budgeted a maximum of around £3,000 ($5,000) for flights+hotel, seeing as the flights are going to be a lot longer and we want more time there... around 10-14 days. I've looked at flights on British Airways and they came to around £700 ($1,100). Can anyone recommend a nice hotel to stay at around Central Park or say within walking distance of Central Park? I mean, it doesn't have to be the Plaza overlooking the park, but somewhere nice and really nearby would be great.
Don't want to have to spend the rest of the budget on the hotel because ist seems like a lot to be spending £2,300 ($3,900) on just a hotel, but I have no idea what rates are like for nice places etc etc. Anyone know anywhere within my budget for 10-14 nights? Bargains are always nice to find, but I don't mind spending a bit on this holiday... I just don't know what to expect really since the other times I went my family paid for it.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Pigs and Tigers in the same house? Man that'd be some weird shit. Like a zoo or something lol.

Just use Orbitz.com, expedia.com, or hotel-rates.com and search through the maps to see exactly where there at. Just make sure you read the reviews and so on. Once you found the one you want, look the hotel up and call to see which is cheaper, through them or through the 3rd service (orbitz).

Yeah have been using Expedia and whatnot, but just wondered if anyone had any inside tips or anything like that to both narrow my search down, and also see if I can get a bargain somewhere.

I have connections in the hotel industry(well in the tourism industry to be exact) and I'll ask around.

For 10 nights that'd be $2000 which is absolutely fine for my budget. Where abouts though? And I want to go after the holiday period to get better prices, as well as avoid all the people... so if that affects the prices, I'm flexible for when we go.

Just got a quote for 11 nights in a Queen size bed @ $2200 and that's fine for us. I haven't got a problem with that price at all, the rooms like nice and it's in a good location very near Central Park.

Far too expensive! It's like $450 a night for the cheapest room!

Ok I understood you were going around Easter so beginning of may? Yeah, just after Easter, so end of April - beginning of May... that sort of time really. Basically want to avoid the rush of people and the higher hotel prices in Easter holidays. Right now looking at either 26th April - 6th May or 10th May - 20th May. 10 nights around that sorta time. So far the Hudson comes in at around 2k USD, but it's to the South West of Central Park between 8th and 9th Ave, W 58th St. Would prefer to be South East side of Central Park near 5th Ave, but not a huge deal I suppose.
