Alright Spence you have been in the business of providing us pleasure at the 12:00 (9 PST) slot for many years now. I want to know throughout all the BBS's the highest point and the lowest point.
Have you ever considered firing anyone in the BBS tenure because they pissed you off so much. If so, who and when.
Jeremy from the 1st BBS is someone I disliked from the get go and fired partly on how much of an ass he was and how inactive he was. He was and is a dick.
Dave at certain points during the end of the first BBS and at the beginning of the 2nd BBS I couldn't stand. To me he was just a bully who was only concerned with how things affected him. It was quite annoying.
Chris obviously. At one point I was getting complaints about him from multiple people every week. I did think about cutting him loose for the sake of the league.
During the whole BBS vs NBN feud you were one of the main guys trying to stop the situation from escalating. However my question is did you feel admiration to those certain GM's who defended the BBS in every way possible even if it was the most unethical ways. Did you admire the loyalty that certain GM's upheld to the foundation that you built?
I didn't see it as loyalty, I saw it as a lack of trust. This latest version of BBS I thought had the ability to be extremely special, but it seemed a handful or more GMs were against it from the start. It was kinda weird that people who had seen me run a successful sim could think I would do something that wasn't in their best interest. I was trying to accumulate the best GMs and start a league that could be seen as the best by everyone. And while I think this version is amazing, better then any other thus far, it couldve been better if everyone was a little more mature about the situation.
Ok now some GM questions.
Your opinion Spence I want three GM's names. Who has the most potential to be a top-notch GM in this league. Who is one that has leveled out their potential. Who is the one that is on the decline. Please explain your reasoning behind each one.
Ok, first off is most potential to be a top-notch GM. Id have to go with Nanz. Mostly because he is so inexperienced, and he has shown the ability to adapt to the OOTP sim and field an impressive team. Once he learns the ropes, and learns to judge talent better I think Nanz is active and intelligent enough to be a consistent threat.
Second, who has leveled off. Id have to say Galo. I think he had some amazing luck in the last BBS getting Sam Cassell and winning two titles. At this point his lack of free time and his inability to recreate the success from the last sim means he's mediocre.
Lastly, the GM on the decline. I think pretty obviously its Martinez. He was a pretty good Gm and a very good DC technician in the first BBS. I feel as though he was pretty mediocre in the 2nd BBS. In this version he's been terrible. I think he does too many moves out of spite or frustration. He makes too many decisions because of anger or ego. His first priority isn't concentrating on winning, or stockpiling talent.
Time and time again we see comments sent at GM's positive and negative from other GM's about their GM skills. Since you see all comments on the board is there anyone's comments you disagree with when they have called out a certain GM? Is a GM not getting the certain credit they deserve? Not necessarily someone underrated but someone who gets heat when they don't deserve it.
In general I hate the tanking accusations. I think only one person deservedly gets tanking accusations, and that's DJ. He had a pretty talented squad at the beginning of the second version of BBS and he continually tried to lose. tweaking his DC when he had a good sim. others who have lost to rebuild have done so by trading talent away and being legitimately bad. I think the general bickering between Dave and Habes because of the tanking is kinda lame.
Other then that I think anyone who gets called out in BBS generally deserves it. Either for being bad, or for being inactive. its part of the league, a part I really like.
Is having 5 gm's from the same grade and the same high school good for the league as a whole? Is their any unfair advantage that you see from this.
BBS was mediocre before you guys came in. It was a good sim, but the activity was horrible overall and it wasn't what it is now. I did what I do now, but before I didnt strive to increase activity. I guess to a certain degree I owe a lot of the success of the BBS to the NC4. So yes, it's good for the league.
Your going to war with 5 GM's. The ones over the year who have shown the most passion for the league and truly symbolize what BBS stands for. Who do you bring and why.
Dave pretty easily. He's such a big part of BBS. He is always trying to make his team and the league better.
Habes. Very passionate about the league as well, but I do feel as though he loses interest as his team declines. When his team is good I feel as though in general he's more positive about everything, including the sim in general.
Pig. Pig is frustrating because he is like Habes in that he is hot and cold. Sometimes he's here a lot, posting, putting effort in. Other times he seems to just lose interest and stop making moves, stop making articles. Right now he's hot for BBS.
Martinez. Good or bad, Martinez does typify the BBS. He is extremely hot headed, and he makes poor decisions sometimes. He wears his emotions on his sleeve, and I think thats how BBS rolls. BBS is an emotionally stimulating sim league that some people cant handle.
A2J. Very quickly he has become addicted to BBS. he loves it, and he loved it pretty quickly. That says a lot I think.
Why doesn't anyone like Elton Brand like I do?
No idea. I'm guessing you ask too much for him. Bigs are rare, 20-10 bigs are rarer.
Final question. Do certain GM's have any styles and tendencies that you have noticed over the years. Such as focusing on a certain type of team, certain type of depth chart, tries to get certain picks, etc. If so, who are they and critique there philosophy.
Like any other league the BBS is a copy cat league. A team wins with defensive bigs and an outside focus, people copy. A team wins with a PF starting at SF, other teams copy. I think all GMs have a different idea of what they want. Some want depth, others want top tier talent. Everyone seems to like shot blocking and a big time scorer.
As for individuals, every GM is different. Dave seems to like ball handlers at all positions. A2J seems to rate players differently then most. Kris seems to think that having 2 solid players and players over 33 will do the trick. Chris likes to give huge contracts to players that look mediocre. essentially, it takes all kinds.
