BBS2000’s Top 50 Most Valuable Players - Part I
This article attempts to rank the top 50 players in the BBS by both trade value within the open market, as well as their impact within a single environment.
Group F "Attainable Building Blocks"
50 Eddy Curry C 19 6'11'' 285 B D+ C- C+ C+ B
Curry is only 19 with potential and an inside rating that many teams rebuilding would find tantalising.
49 Stephen Jackson SG 24 6'8'' 221 C+ A- C B C B
With a pretty good ratings already, Jackson should develop a little more and give teams a strong and youthful ‘kick’.
48 Ron Artest SF 22 6'8'' 252 C+ B- C+ A- C B
Has the potential to be one of the leagues best defenders. Poor development has hurt his value quite a lot.
47 Stromile Swift PF 22 6'9'' 225 B C- C B+ B- B
A surprising training camp boosts him into the top 50. GM’s may be weary that it was a one off though.
46 Caron Butler SG 22 6'7'' 235 C+ B C B C+ B
A solid 2/3 man who has more room to develop at 22. A solid all round player who most GM’s see as a future tier 3 talent in the future.
45 Richard Jefferson SF 22 6'7'' 225 C+ B C A- C B
A similar player to Butler however more of a naturalised wing. A better defender and a better slasher.
44 Tayshaun Prince SF 22 6'9'' 215 C+ B- C A- C A
GM’s like Prince’s defensive presence as well as his A potential. Not much separates him from Butler.
43 DeSagana Diop C 20 7'0'' 300 C+ D+ D+ A- B- A
A potential. 20 years of age and A- defense make Diop a starter for the future. GM’s love defensive big men.
42 Michael Redd SG 23 6'6'' 218 C+ A- C B+ C- B
Already one of the best outside shooters in the league. Redd is also an outside shooter that can also play defense.
41 Gerald Wallace SF 20 6'8'' 218 B+ C- D+ A- C+ B
A poor training camp has hurt his value a lot. Still a B+ inside scorer and A- defender at 20 years of age.
Group E "They’re Probably Worth More to Us Than They Are to You"
40 Dikembe Mutombo C 36 7'2'' 261 B D+ D- A A- C
Mutumbo is the oldest player in the top 50. He still has some gas left in the tank and is also still one of the leagues best shot blockers/defenders. He would be invaluable to any playoff team and is a definite game changer.
39 Grant Hill SF 30 6'8'' 228 A- C+ B B C B
Hill has already won a championship in the BBS. He is a great slasher and a good defender. He is 30 years old and knows what it takes to win. Like Mutumbo, he would be a key player in any playoff run.
38 Antonio McDyess PF 28 6'9'' 220 A- C- C B+ B C
A very underrated player. A great inside scorer and defender who is doing his thing out West with Utah. A great second option scorer who knows how to notch-up wins.
37 Ray Allen SG 27 6'5'' 205 C+ A- C+ B- C- C
His death during training camp has killed his value. GM’s are very tentative to trade for him even though his production has barely changed. If he improved in one area during training camp, he’d be in the teens.
36 Rashard Lewis SF 23 6'10'' 221 B B C B- C A
Lewis didn’t have the best training camp for any 23 year old however his skill set still keeps him inside the top 40. New Orleans probably value him more than any other team.
35 Zydrunas Ilgauskas C 27 7'3'' 260 B- C- D+ B+ B C
Centers hold a lot of value in the BBS so acquiring a good one is something every team looks for. Z’s defensive presence and solid ability to reboud and put 20+ on the score board night in and nigh out puts him inside the top 40.
34 Carlos Boozer PF 21 6'9'' 280 B C C C B+ B
Drafted behind Yao Ming and Dwyane Wade, Boozer’s all-star appearance and sensational play for Cleveland this season makes him one of the leagues most valuable players. His lack of defense (in particular BPG) hurt him though.
33 Ben Wallace C 28 6'9'' 243 C+ D- C A+ A B
Very one dimensional however he could almost be described as the ‘perfect’ big man. Only 28 years of age with B scouted potential, there isn’t a team in the league who wouldn’t love to have Wallace on their team.
32 Steve Francis PG 24 6'3'' 193 B- B+ B B C B
A phenomenal training camp has skyrocketed Francis up the value boards of most GM’s. His assist to turnover ratio does hurt his value slightly however the statistics that he is currently putting up cannot be ignored.
31 Stephon Marbury PG 25 6'2'' 180 B B+ A- B C B
Only a year older than Francis with a better inside game and handles, Marbury is one of few talented all-round point guards in the league and holds a lot of value amongst GM’s who are looking to contend.
Group D "You'll Have to Bowl Us Over, But We're Listening"
30 Chauncey Billups PG 26 6'3'' 204 C+ B+ A- B+ C A
Billups could be higher. His value is rather ambiguous. He is 26, with A potential and is coming off a great training camp, but then again, he is 26, is rather turnover prone and doesn’t have the greatest point guard production for his ratings. Still, I think he is a top point guard in the league. It’s hard to gauge.
29 Desmond Mason SG 25 6'5'' 215 B+ C+ C B+ C C
Masons had a terrific start to the year and placed himself inside the leagues top 10 in points per game. He is only 25 and should be a 20+ppg scorer for the rest of his career. I see him staying in Minnesota for a while.
28 Joe Johnson SG 21 6'8'' 225 B B+ C+ B- C A
He isn’t shooting a great % from the field this season for the Warriors however with B B+ scoring ratings and A potential at only 21, Johnson’s value is incredibly high amongst rebuilding teams in the BBS.
27 Rip Hamilton SG 24 6'7'' 196 B- A- C+ B C- B
Doing a great job in Phoenix at the moment, Hamiltons sensational training camp and great production make him very valuable. Not to mention that he is only 24 years old with B potential.
26 Manu Ginobili SG 25 6'6'' 210 B- B+ C+ A- C- A
Ginobilli could be higher, I’m just not sure how highly other GM’s hold him. He has had some great training camps and benefited well from the mid-season progression. His production has been awesome and he is only 25. He will climb the rankings in seasons to come.
25 Mike Bibby PG 24 6'2'' 190 C A- A B+ D B
One of the most underrated players in the league, Bibby is the prototype point guard with incredibly good handles, solid defense and a very sweet outside shot. Bibby is only 24 and has room to move. Most GM’s in the league weather they are rebuilding or contending would love to have Bibby running the show.
24 Tyson Chandler PF 20 7'1'' 235 B- D+ D+ A- B A
Chandlers 20 years old with an already impressive rating line. A solid interior and post scorer with above average defensive and rebounding skills make the 7’1” centre incredibly appealing. Along with Pau Gasol, Amare Stoudemire and Jermaine O’Neal, Chandler is the future of the big man in the BBS.
23 Alonzo Mourning C 32 6'10'' 261 A- C- C A- A- C
Big Zo is a winner. He already has 1 BBS ring and will be looking for a second this season. He is one of the most dominant players the BBS will ever see and continutes to do today, even though he is 32. He is capable of putting up 30+ every night and also of blocking 3-4 shots per night. He makes any team a contender.
22 Chris Webber PF 29 6'10'' 245 A- C C+ B+ B C
Webber took the Cavs to the finals in the first season of the BBS. He averaged 30-10-5 last year and is a very unique player. His age holds him back a lot however his recent surge in training camp makes him a very valuable asset.
21 Steve Nash PG 28 6'3'' 195 C+ A A B D+ B
Nash sits only slightly behind Kidd in terms of value. Nash is a better shooter than Kidd however Kidd is a far superior defender. Still, Nash is an incredible point guard with amazing handles.
20 Jason Kidd PG 29 6'4'' 214 B B- A A+ C B
J-Kidd is one of the leagues best point guards. He is the leagues best defensive guard and knows how to hold onto the ball. His age and lack of real post-season success holds him back slightly however he would be an incredible acquisition for any playoff team.
19 Paul Pierce SG 25 6'7'' 220 B A- C B C B
Pierces scoring ability make him a very valuable commodity amongst BBS GM’s. If he were 2 years younger he would rank somewhere inside the top 15 however his B potential almost makes up for it.
18 Pau Gasol C 22 7'0'' 230 B C C B B- A
Gasol progress and development as a young player has impressed many GM’s enough to put him inside the leagues top 20 most valuable players. The Spaniard who is still only 22 has A potential and an inside game that rivals only the best in the BBS.
17 Allen Iverson SG 27 6'0'' 171 A- B B A- C- C
Iverson has developed into one of the most dynamic scorers in the BBS. He is averaging over 30ppg whilst shooting at a very high %. He is very underrated, most likely due to his size and his age (GM’s see Iverson as ‘old’), however Iverson has the ability to put up 30+ on any given night against any given team.
16 Shawn Marion SF 24 6'7'' 221 B+ C C B+ B B
Marion, like Gasol, has developed well in the BBS and the potential for him to be a superstar can’t be ignored. He is already a B+ inside scorer and a B+ defender which GM’s find very attractive in a wing player. Marion just misses out on the top 15 on account of his outside shot and also because he isn’t really considered ‘young’ at 24 years of age.
Group C: “Thanks, But We're Going to Hold Onto Them For Now”
15 Jermaine O'Neal PF 24 6'11'' 232 B+ C- C B B- A
O’Neals explosive training camp was noticed around the league and at the same time, gifted him a spot within the top 15. Although his statistical production thus far isn’t up to par with his desirable rating line, the potential is there which makes him incredibly valuable to playoff and rebuilding teams.
14 Gilbert Arenas PG 20 6'3'' 191 B- B B- C+ C A
Anyone traded for Shaquille O’Neal should be somewhere high in this list and this time is not exeption. Averaging close to 20ppg for the 76ers in only his first season, Arenas has the potential to develop into a lethal scorer. His potential and age as well as the hype surrounding him entering the league all add up to an incredible amount of value.
13 Amare Stoudemire PF 19 6'10'' 245 B- D+ C- B- B- A
Amare doesn’t have the impressive rating line one would expect to see for a top 15 player however his potential and also his age (19) as well as his position (PF) all equal value.
12 Tony Parker PG 20 6'2'' 177 B C+ B A- C- A
Parkers unique set of ratings, potential, age and rookie season land him inside the top 12.
11 Vince Carter SG 25 6'7'' 215 B+ A- C+ B+ C B
An incredible training camp and 29+ppg averages make Carter one of the leagues most prolific scorers. Some GM’s may wonder how much more room Carter has to grow, but as a perineal 30ppg guard, should it matter? If the Heat can put Carter through some defensive camps, he should be one of the leagues best very soon.
This article attempts to rank the top 50 players in the BBS by both trade value within the open market, as well as their impact within a single environment.
