As BBS makes the transition away from the short-lived college league-based draft files and instead opens up draft files to fake players created by league members, mystery is everywhere! I don't even know where I'll sleep tonight. Also, a lot of interest prospects have been made, which makes for the most exciting and unique draft class yet. This draft file offers some fucking weird names, and some fucking weird players. It's hard to know which position some prospects will end up playing because of their unique skill sets, just as it's hard to know if some of the top prospects will pan out because they are so limited in some areas. I also find it hard to even know myself sometimes. . Here is a look at the top ten prospects in this year's draft class.
1.Devereux St. Cloud SF 6'6'' 225 19 B- B C+ C+ C A
St. Cloud is one of the most talented players ever to have entered BBS. He offers the total package for a wing player. He has speed, which partly accounts for his B- inside scoring and C+ handles. He will undoubtedly be an elite shooter, given that he enters BBS with B outside scoring at just 19 years old. His defense isn't high, but C+ defense at age 19 is certainly not a weakness. He has Kevin Durant written all over him, and even if he doesn't explode, he looks like a lock to have a career a la Carmelo Anthony's. His size and weight suggest he might be better suited to spend his career at the 2; I wouldn't be surprised if he already has B- defense there. Reported concerns over his attitude haven't seemed to carry over to the draft file, and coupling that with the fact that he has can't-miss ratings, he goes first.
2. Duck-Young Bak SG 6'5'' 195 19 B+ C C C+ C A
Bak is probably the most exciting prospect in this draft, but even if he has higher potential than St. Cloud, he's going to need a lot of work to become a well-rounded SG. His outside game will have to jump a full letter grade. It's much easier to project St. Cloud as an A-/A- scorer than it is to envision Bak as such. Still, his inside scoring looks like it'll be the best a 2 in BBS has ever had. Given that this likely means he has excellent speed, he may be a bit turnover prone--note his C handles. Again, C+ defense means with some good TCs he can be a good defender. The biggest concern here, of course, is his outside scoring. If he gets attention in RCs, and his outside scoring develops in TCs, he may be the best player in this draft. But almost every shooting guard that has had an impact in BBS has come in with a higher grade outside, and even if Bak has an amazing drive to the basket and all the potential in the world, his outside game is cause for concern.
3. Ja'Shon Garrison SG 6'5'' 205 20 B C+ B C+ C- A
Simply put, Garrison has a shitload of game. His B inside is a huge starting rating for an SG. The same can be said of his B handles. For an SG to come into BBS with both of these ratings and A potential, he better get a lot of attention. How many SGs even play with B handles. He's a lock to at least get to B+ inside and handles and this league is pretty thin on excellent SGs right now. He could be a nightmare matchup. Furthermore, he doesn't have any weaknesses in his game, as he's an above-average shooter and defender.
4. Nathaniel Davidson PG 6'2'' 208 18 C B- A- B- C A
A- handles at 18? So few 18 year-olds even enter BBS that this guy should get some attention for this alone. He'll have seven seasons in BBS before he even turns 25! He's the best ballhandler, and PG, in this class, and is an elite defender for the class. Given that he's 18, he has a better window of opportunity to improve than anyone else in these rankings, which bumps his status above the talent inside scorers of the class.
5. Alfonso Robinson C 6'11'' 271 21 B+ D C- B- B- A
Alfonso Robinson comes into BBS looking like a more developed DeMarcus Cousins, and that's scary. He should be an elite inside scorer for the duration of his career, and with potential, he seems like he's also on the path to being a very good defender and rebounder. His handles are nothing to complain about for a big man, either, and he has awesome size. No draft notes on this guy, so he's a bit of an unknown, but he also might have the best ratings in the file, save for his D outside. That'll need to develop or he'll cost his teams games with his foul-shooting.
6. Gabe Machata PF 6'8'' 235 19 C+ B C B B- A
He reminds many of a lesser version of Michael Beasley. Machata enters BBS with the ability to defend extremely well at the 4 along with B outside. He's going to be a nightmare matchup almost immediately. If his inside scoring, and offense in general, progresses much, watch out, because not a lot of power forwards are even this talented right now. An optimistic but realistic projection might be B/A-/C/B+/B, especially since he'll get RC attention. He's going be a great forward and a tough matchup. He'd be a perfect fit at the 4 for an outside and fast lineup. Wonder who drafts him.
7. Josh Ely SF 6'10'' 220 19 B- B C- C+ C A
He might be the best scorer in the draft. His attitude, however, sucks, and despite his awesome ratings, he hasn't been mentioned among the top players in the class, so his status suffers. C- handles really are terrible for a wing, and scoring definitely suffers from this. But Ely has ridiculous size for a guy with his outside shot. If he lives up to the hype of being the number one recruit in his class, we might be looking at Kevin Durant without the handles. But he has a long way to go to get there. He'll be an option scorer someday, from the looks of it. Banking on anything beyond that looks to be a risk, though.
8. Cody English PF 6'9'' 249 22 B+ C C- C+ C A
Yeah, he doesn't rebound well at all, and his defense isn't great considering he's a 4. But he enters BBS with B+/C offense at 6'9, 242, and that can't be overlooked. He'll have a career as an option scorer without RC attention, so with three RCs to his defensive and rebounding attributes, he could be an elite big. That prospect alone puts him in the top ten.
9. Billy Hoyle PG 6'2'' 175 20 C B- B+ C+ C- A
Billy Hoyle has garnered the most attention of any player in this class because his weird parents changed their last name in order to name him after a character in the movie, "White Men Can't Jump". He can't jump. However, he's the second best PG in this class, and might be the best passer. Great attitude on this one, and he dates a fiery Spanish woman. I like it. She's funny. How much potential does he really have, given his lack of athleticism? Great distributors are pretty rare in BBS, and he could be an awesome A:TO ratio type of guy, but whether or not he'll ever defend or score well in BBS remains to be seen. If the potential is there, he'll have a long career as an elite PG in BBS.
10. Karron Thomson C 6'11'' 267 21 B C- B B- B- B
Karron Thomson might look like a system player at first glance because of his B handles and a reported lack of athleticism, but really, he's just versatile. He'll be the best passing big in BBS (history?) and he is a very good scorer, defender and rebounder for his size. He slides into the top ten on projections alone: with RCs, it's not bizarre to assume he'll easily get to A-/C-/B+/B/B. He'd then become a borderline starter-quality defender and rebounder, one of the better inside scoring centers, and the best ballhandler, inch-for-inch, in BBS.
