Discuss.
I'm watching this congressman on Outside the Lines stating his case for a playoff system (he's from Texas ironically, haha). He has proposed a bill that would force a playoff system. The BCS Commissioner has stated his case for the current system.
Will we ever see a playoff system?

128 team single elimination tournament, starts week 1.
But really, I hope they do. If they did I'd go USC-Florida with USC winning.

I hope so. 16 or 32 teams sounds good to me.

I have my doubts. Schools make too much money from the bowls.

I think there should be an 8 team tournament. They could somehow add bowls to the mix of the tourney...something like
Quarter Final - Orange Bowl (ACC Champ Vs Big East Champ) Quarter Final - Fiesta Bowl(Big 12 Champ Vs. At Large) Quarter Final - Sugar Bowl ( SEC Champ Vs. At Large) Quarter Final - Rose Bowl(Big Ten Champ Vs. Pac 10 Champ) Semi Final Semi Final Championship Game

They could also have the Semi Final's and Finals in a predetermined stadium every season like the Final Four.
That would bring in a lot more cash for college football.

Schools will still be getting that paper and football fans will get to see great match-ups. Win-win all over the place.

That way if you leave out a controversial team it won't be as big of a deal because you could argue they had 1 too many losses or shit like that.

And if you're worried about a team like Boise State being left off.. have like they do in NCAA where two teams play for the at-large spot.

I hate the idea of a 8 team playoff. I would want to see either 4 or 16 if anything was done, but I would honestly prefer to not see a playoff.
The only reason I don't want to see a playoff is because I think it would completely fuck the lesser talented teams that had great seasons. For example, next year USC loses their usual game to a shitty Pac 10 team. The Big East or ACC Champion goes undefeated and has to face USC is round 1. They would definitely be an underdog and probably get their ass kicked. Maybe some people think the most talented team should win, but college football has never been like that and I don't want to see it change.
As for a playoff system.
4 teams: +1 type of playoff using a couple of BCS bowl games as semifinals. The Rose Bowl is the only bowl that would stand up to this because they want Big 10-Pac10 regardless. Set a championship game 2 weekends after the bowl season is over.
16 team: Let all of the Conference Champs in (11 teams) and 5 at larges. This way you would have teams like Buffalo and Troy playing the 1 and 2 seeds and it would essentially be a bye for them (much like the NCAA Tournament). It also gives you enough at large teams to avoid any big controversies. You would have a lot of great games and 4 or 5 upsets every year.
8 team: I think this would cause just as many problems. Instead of arguing who should get in, we would argue if the Big East or ACC (or whatever is the weakest conference that year) deserved a team in. There would also be major disputes on who should get the At-Large bids since there would only be 2 spots. Mid Major schools would take this down to 1 at large bid which just isn't going to work.

Div 2 does it an it kicks ass with it. 8 is too small... No way in hell Texas Tech shouldn't make it. And in an 8 team playoff, theere's a chance they'd be left out. All 0 and 1 loss teams should play in a playoff, simple as that. Then good teams with 2 losses. That'll add up to about 16 teams. Perfect.

4 teams is enough. A 4 team playoff seems easy enough, easier to implement, and doesn't open up it up for every team like Ducky's idea.
A 16 team playoff would be terrible. Adding 3 games makes no sense, that's another 1/4th of a season added on to a team's schedule. College football does NOT need to be like basketball, we don't need Cinderella's. The beauty of college football is the importance of the regular season, giving 16 teams a chance at the championship ruins that completely. It also ties up bowl games and hurts smaller school's revenue by forcing them to smaller bowls or out of bowl season at all. It's the most unrealistic idea in the thread.
Thing I like about the 4 team idea is it still leaves in the amount of controversy about who should be in and out, but gives those 4 teams a chance to settle it on the field. They can keep the 4 major bowls, just have 3 of them rotate as semi-final bowls and the other as the championship.
Realistically, there will be no playoff for college football anytime in the next 5-10 years. If you think Obama is going to do it, you're delusional. The BCS controls the post-season process too much to try to make it a playoff rather than their sponsored bowl games, and the NCAA is the wrong organization you want to look for if you expect change of anything.

8 teams is PLENTY. more than that and i wouldnt care. less than that and i wouldnt like it. 2 at larges and the 6 conference leaders. texas tech wouldnt deserve to be in. they didnt close their season and they got SLAUGHTERED.
