In one of the most intriguing drafts in recent BBS history, 3-5 players have a legit chance at going #1 overall. The top players have differing starting skill levels and questionable potential which makes almost every selection this year more difficult then usual. Here is a look at the 2019 Draft by position…
Centers…
Bobby Hill…Hill could go #1, but his attitude is horrible and most scouts say they wouldn’t take him in the lotto. Doesn’t love the game, but he is so talented the game is easy for him. Very selfish player that is all about points and boards and not much else. Good defender but only because of his athleticism. Recent rumors of steroid use have also dropped his stock.
Simon Ben-Ephraim…A great frame, and nice upside make Ephraim a lotto lock. Ephraim is a solid post scorer and free throw shooter. Not particularly adept at any phase of defense, overall he is solid. Good strength should only get better with his frame.
Tyson Haynes…Impressive looking player that never performed in college. Solid at everything, spectacular at nothing this guy will be hit or miss, and in this draft that means 18-25.
Baek Hyun Moon…Moon is a very good offensive player who just doesn’t care to be physical or defend. Moon is very strong, but he doesn’t use it unless he’s near the basket with the ball. Moon has decent athletic ability, but he has no defensive presence what so ever and doesn’t seem to be interested in learning any.
DerMarr Daulton…Daulton is a very good post defender and inside scorer. His strength and offensive rebounding are also pluses. Unfortunately for Daulton he doesn’t have much lift, and wont block shots. He’s mediocre athletically and that could push him to the end of round 1.
Power Forwards…
Rory Davis...Davis is yet another player who could go #1 overall. Davis is a scoring machine in the paint. His size strength and jumping ability are all above average, but his post moves are legendary for a college kid. Defense and rebounding aren’t impor4tant to him, but he has enough upside to be respectable at both.
Julius Jackson…Jackson is a big time post defender. While not a shot blocker, Jackson is so good in the post he literally stones almost every guy he comes up against. Jackson is also a very good post scorer and rebounder. A top 15-18 pick for sure.
Manny Williams…Williams has some nice upside and loves to share the ball but has no offensive game to speak of. He reminds some of Robert Horry, but plus about 20 pounds. Williams is a good defender and rebounder and should find his way into any teams rotation as a rookie.
Mylo Carson…Carson is a very nice scorer, but his defense consists of blocked shots and his rebounding is non existent. In any other draft class he’d go top 10. In this one he might not go top 25.
Ethan Olek…A solid player with the ability to score, Olek cant really defend or board much. Probably a bench player.
Small Forwards…
Byron Hasty…Hasty is a very good player who works extremely hard. An excellent leader, Hasty is a big time mid range player. Hasty is also an above average passer and rebounder. Hasty is someone that could become a Karron Johnson type player one day.
Jens Weissmuller…Weissmuller has an odd skill set. While he has almost no offensive game, his passing, defense and rebounding are all better then average. Ideally he would be a great bench player for a contending team playing 1,2 and 3. Weissmuller also has enough upside to be a surprise player down the road.
Kevin Blake…Blake is one of the many utility players in this draft. Not great at any one thing, he is very good at many. Blake can play 2, 3 and 4. Blake has good strength and is a decent defender. Blake is also a pretty solid passer. Good bench player.
Julio Mann…Mann doesn’t have great upside, but he can be a great defender in BBS. Mann can guard 4 positions and loves to fight for loose balls and create steals. A very good 3 point shooter as well, Mann should be a good role player.
Donovon Lon…Lon is intriguing because of his upside. Only 20, Lon starting playing basketball at 16. Most scouts think he made a mistake coming out this early, but because of his athleticism and well balanced skills he should be a lock for the first round.
Devon Wedge…Wedge was an absolute stud at Washington State. A balanced player that played all 5 positions, and played them well in the Pac-10. Wedge is the type of player every team should have coming off the bench. Probably doesn’t have the athleticism to star in BBS, but he could be a Geoff McDermott type.
Shooting Guards…
Shelley Cruise…A potential #1 pick Cruise is a flat out scorer with huge potential. He should be an A- A- scorer with 2 years and will only get better offensively. The draw back obviously is the defense. He may become a C defender one day, but that’s best case scenario. Huge question mark overall because he is so bad defensively.
Derrick Thompson…Thompson is a well built wing that loves to score. At 6-6 217 Thompson is strong and can play 2 or 3. A very balanced scorer Thompson could score 15-18 as a rookie and should become a 22-25 PPG guy. Definitely a sleeper for the top pick.
Curtis Sanders…Sanders is a balanced scorer with good skills both offensively and defensively. His medical condition has scared some teams away though and his stock has dropped. Anyone taking him inside the top 20 is probably reaching.
Renaldo McFadden…McFadden like Thompson is built like a truck. Great size and strength will be a plus. McFadden can score inside and from mid range but isn’t a threat from 3, yet. A solid defender, McFadden should be a great pick somewhere between 6-10.
Terence Melling…Melling is in the mold of Allen Iverson and Kenny Boynton. An undersized shooting guard that doesn’t have the tools to play 1, but loves to score. Melling is great going to the rim, but struggles with his midrange game. Melling, while not a bad defender plays more for the steal and isn’t great man to man. Lock for the top 8.
Point Guards…
Qussam Al-Jeddha…Top PG in the class and a potential #1 pick. QAJ is a supreme ball handler, with an incredible A-TO ratio. Decent scorer who can get to the basket, but his jump shot and range is non existent. Decent defender and rebounder for his size, should get better.
Hakin Alexander…Another PG with amazing ability to control the ball. Just doesn’t turn it over. Jump shot and FT ability is amazing. Just a knock down jump shooter. Not a great defender but can force turnovers and plays the passing lanes well. Lotto pick.
LB DiNunzio…Probably the least likeable kid most scouts have ever seen come into BBS. He just has so much attitude it literally makes scouts and GMs walk away from him. It doesn’t help that he looks like a carrot. The message from most scouts? Don’t draft him.
Sidney Deane…Deane is an over aged shooting guard that isn’t big enough to play 2. While a terrific shooter and good play maker, he makes too many really poor decisions to ever play too many minutes. Deane should be drafted in Round one, but he should be a starter.
Evan Hagen…Hagen might be the surprise of the draft. A big player in a little body, Hagen was dominant at Portland State. A balanced scorer with big time quickness, Hagen should be a very good 3rd guard type that could develop into a starter in a couple years.
Mason Purify…Purify is a solid college point guard that may not have the quickness to make it big on the next level. A solid player for sure, but he wont be elite. Backup player that will give quality minutes if used correctly.
