Food for thought. An article using historical statistics to come up with intriguing, amazing, weird, and just plain silly facts.
Through 2020 the New York Knicks have been the most successful franchise accumulating 950 wins, 135 playoff wins, 7 finals appearances, and 3 championships all in just 13 playoff appearances. Surprisingly, the Lakers and Pistons(16) lead in this category with Seattle(15), Denver, Miami, Philly, Milwaukee, Dallas all with 14 respectively.
Only the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers come close to matching the Knicks in Regular Season wins with 930 and 932 respectively. The only other teams to top 900 wins are the Heat(904), Bucks(905) and Pistons(913).
The 6 teams combine for a total of 16 Finals appearances(7 of them to the Knicks) and 9 championships. The Knicks and the Mavericks are the only two teams with 3 championships apiece. The Mavericks are the most successful Finals winner going 3 for 3 in Finals appearances.
On the bottom end of the spectrum the following teams have never had a finals appearance -
Boston
Washington
Atlanta
New Orleans
Indiana
Toronto
Houston
Minnesota
San Antonio
Los Angeles Clippers
Phoenix Suns
Of all those teams, the Wizards lead in playoff appearances with 12. The Hornets are the lowest by far with only 2 playoff appearances in franchise history. The next closest team? The Cleveland Cavaliers with 7 playoff appearances, having reached the Finals once.
The worst franchise in BBS history goes to the New Orleans Hornets barely surpassing the 700 win mark with 701. They are also the only franchise left that has yet to reach double-digit wins in the playoffs(8). They however, do not have the worst playoff winning percentage, that dubious honor goes to the Toronto Raptors whom in 9 playoff appearances have a 15-38 record for an astounding .283 winning percentage.
Highest winning playoff percentage goes to the New York Knicks 135-78 record for an incredible .634%
In 2018, the Dallas Mavericks smashed a ton of offensive team records breaking the scorin record(119.5ppg), assist record ( 28.5 APG), and FG percentage record (.485% FG.) To put it into perspective. The highest scoring team in BBS this season, the Timberwolves lead the league with 115.4ppg. The Mavericks led the league this season again in APG with 26.9 and had the third best turnover rate at 11.0 TOPG.
One record that seems to be impossible to match is courtesy of the 2000 Portland Trail Blazers who allowed a ridiculous 83.3PPG. How close were we to watching a team break that record this year? Not close at all with the Pistons leading the league with an astounding 100.9PPG. One dubious record that has also stood the test of time goes to the 2001 Indiana Pacers whom till this day hold the TOPG record with 18.8.
One individual record that has stood since 2003 and was unfortunately the only bright spot in this troubled franchise was the PPG Season Record held by Alonzo Mourning of the New Orleans Hornets. This record was broken this season courtesy of Kevin Durant who finished with an incredible 34.4ppg and perhaps will be hard to match for some time.
