Background: 'Sly Roll' is one of the best players to ever grace a street ball court. He is a legend in D.C. pick up games for his tenacity on the court and unwillingness to give up. Although he's from the Maryland/D.C. area, he patterns his game around Mark Jackson a famous NYC point guard and Jason Kidd, a profound Bay Area guard. He's basically a throw back player who also does the little intangibles not on the score sheet to win.
Rollins seems to have everything going for him except one problem. He's only been a stud at the high school and street ball levels. After a stellar season in high school averaging 29 points, 13 assists and 5 steals per game, Rollins tore his MCL and several teams like Maryland and Georgetown pulled their scholarship offers. Once he healed, Rollins couldn't get his SAT scores up in time to get on any Big East schools interested, so he just ended up playing on the streets following high school graduation.
Former MCA teammates Kevin Durant and Greivis Vasquez have no doubts in Rollins' game translating to BBS even though he has no college experience. Vasquez believes Rollins has barely scratched the surface on how good he can be.
Strengths: Nicknamed ‘Sly Roll’ because of his name and his knack to be deceptive especially with his finger roll. An absolutely deadly mid range shooter. He's the classic tear-drop point guard that penetrates and hits runners in the lane. Very quick off the dribble and always get his teammates involved in the game no matter what. A ball hawk when in man-to-man situations. Has a 41" vertical leap and can often jump higher than most centers for the tip in the beginning of the game. Gets more blocks than steals because he doesnt cheat in passing lanes. Rebounds with so much tenacity and has a nice back-to-basket, both traits similar to that of Kidd. Clutch free throw shooter.
Weakenesses: Age. He's 24 and has not played organized basketball for six years. His ceiling and even career may be short because of it. Pretty weak physically. Struggled to do most reps on the bench and squat presses. Could improve his range and accuracy beyond 20 feet. One of the better shot blockers at 6'1 ever but does not get as many steals even though his defense is above average. Creates as many turnovers as the average point guard but still smarter than most rookie guards coming into the draft. Moderately injury prone because of his history of injuries on the streets and in high school.
Best case scenario: A more athletic Jason Kidd
Worse case scenario: AJ Price with more defense
Summary: Top 10 pick. Could be one of the better point guards to emerge in a draft and should only drop because of his lack of proven experience and age.
