Mauricio Carrillo

SF
6’7
210
Country: Mexico
Projected Ratings:
B- D+ D+ C+ B A
Background: Carrillo has been a czar in Mexico for sometime now. Only recently did he start turning heads with his basketball ability. Before he had been a “coyote,” or someone that helps illegal aliens cross the border into the United States. After being busted by Border Patrol for the third time, Carrillo devoted his life to playing basketball. Since Mexico is still easing into the basketball game, Carrillo could not get his hands on much basketball footage. Thanks to a former BBS player and fellow countryman, Eduardo Najera, Carrillo has been mentored and studied his game ever since.
After making the Mexican National Team, Carrillo made his debut with a 25 point, 14 rebound, 6 steal and 4 block performance against Costa Rica. However, most of his points came off dunks and put backs and he did foul out after playing 34 minutes.
Most scouts agree that he has a phenomenal ability to dunk, rebound and defend but have their reservations about his other abilities. His upside is undeniable on all accounts though. Early indications are that he could be the Mexican version of Delvon Roe or could be no better than his mentor, Najera.
Strengths: Extremely quick for his size. His time in his past occupation allowed him the ability to become quicker than most small forwards and even some guards off the ball. Gets up in the air very quickly and jumps and dunks with ease. Could win a dunk contest before his BBS days are done. Positions himself well for rebounds because of his work with Najera. His defense is emerging and should be better than normal with proper reward camp attention.
Weaknesses: Cannot hit jump shots at this time. That part of his game may never be fully developed. Very selfish with the ball when he gets it. Almost tries to do too much when he has the ball which leads to some turnovers. Has good strength but needs to work out to add more muscle and bulk. An up and coming defender but it comes with a consequence because he’s very foul prone. Terrible at the foul line right now.
Best case scenario: Delvon Roe without a jumper
Worse case scenario: A better dunking version than Ulysses Limon
Summary: Borderline Lotto-Mid 1st Round pick. Has high potential so he should make his way into the starting lineup soon but probably won’t be starter until he receives some more RC attention for his handling and shooting specifically.
