Renaldo McFadden
6'6" 225 lbs
SG
22 years old
Pittsburgh
2018 Ratings - B C C B C A
McFadden is a NYC product who moved to Jersey City before his sophomore year to attend St. Anthony's High School. Pitt's NYC/NJ pipeline helped the program land McFadden, who committed to Pitt before his junior year. McFadden has the trademark toughness that Jamie Dixon looks for in his players. He's the most herald Pitt NBA prospect since DeJuan Blair. Was the Big East Player of the Year and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year in his junior season at Pitt. Averaged 21.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 0.7 APG on 54% from the field.
Pro's: Tough kid. Great hustle, made a name for himself as a freshman for diving for loose balls and running back on defense. His offensive game live off taking his defender off the dribbles, but he's not afraid of contact in the paint. Good strength. Came to Pitt as a wiry 195 lb kid, but worked hard to add muscle and he's filled out his frame over the years. Incredible at drawing contact and maintaining his balance to finish plays. Gets to the line ALOT. Great handles and and an amazing first step. Amazing competitor, he has an incredible desire to win and be great. Exceptional perimeter defender, good in the passing lanes but he isn't overly risky in one-on-one situations. Has great athleticism.
Con's: Really struggles with his shot from anywhere outside of 12 feet. Got by without a consistent jumper due to a quick first step and premier athleticism, but he might struggle in the league when teams sag off on him. Was a 54% FT shooter in college. Shot 27% from three in college. Mechanically unsound release, but he's seeking the help of Rick Barry to aid him out before his Orlando workouts. Playing in a somewhat stagnant offense in college didn't really hone or develop his passing skills. Amazing passion for the game, but can get over-emotional at times. Was suspended for 3 games for punching a Syracuse player in the balls.
Projection: Top 10 Pick
2019 UPDATE:
Before withdrawing his name before the BBS draft, McFadden worked on his shot mechanics with Rick Barry. Practicing under the tutelage of one of the best shooters in basketball history paid dividends, as McFadden went on to shoot an improved 36% from three and 70% from the line in his senior season. Defenses were forced to play him honest, and McFadden had his best season yet. With the graduation of the team's starting point guard, McFadden became Pitt's primary ball-handler. He excelled in his new role. McFadden thrived off a setting up his teammates off his ability to penetrate defenses.
BBS scouts are still skeptical if his three-point shooting can improve anymore, but his innate ability to create off the dribble for himself and others puts him in an elite class of 2019 BBS prospects. McFadden never takes plays off, even when his team is up or down by 20. He's a gritty defender who doesn't give up on a play.
New Ratings: B C+ C+ B C A
Projection: Top 3 pick
BBS Comparisons: Scoring skills of J'Shon Garrison, playmaking ability of Brandon Roy
