Byron Hasty
6'7" 205 lbs.
20 years old
SF
2018 Ratings: C+ B B- C C A
New Ratings: C+ B- B- C+ C+ B
Hasty, from Saginaw, MI, was highly-touted prospect when he arrived in Ann Arbor a year ago. He led the Wolverines to a surprise NCAA tournament appearance. Hasty has an offensive game that is a mesh between Danny Granger's scoring ability and a PG's passing skills. Defense is an issue though.
Pros: Incredibly fluid on the offensive end. Always makes the right decisions. Uses his dribble to create for others. Incredible passer for his size. Great court vision, very effective in transition. Always knows where his teammates are. Not quick, but Hasty is elusive with his dribble and uses that and his big frame to get into the paint to create for himself and others. Exceptional mid-range game. Uses the backboard better than any played in college basketball. Adequate strength. Very mature for a freshman, stepped up as one of the leaders of a very young basketball team.
Cons: Unselfish to a fault. Has the skills to be a great offensive player but looks for his teammates more than he should. Lateral quickness is an issue, he needs to improve his footwork on the defensive end. Very shaky three point shot; was a 28% shooter from three in his one year at Michigan.
Projection: top 10 this year, could be higher next year if he improves on his deficiencies
2019 Update:
Hasty's scoring game once again took a backseat with freshman "Kenny Hardaway" becoming Michigan's primary scorer. A wrist injury on his shooting hand hindered the development of his three shot. Hasty had to battle on the boards for defensive rebounds due to playing on an undersized team. The wrist injury caused Hasty to shift his focus to improving his defensive game, and he improved his footwork and used his long frame to his advantage.
Many highly-respected doctors doubt whether Hasty's wrist injury will be fully healed by the pre-draft camp and the team workouts. Some teams are intrigued by his potential as a PG in this league.
