2022 BBS Draft Notes
A handful of scouts love this draft, while most are indifferent saying it’s a mediocre year. One scout said, “Although it looks great on the surface, the more questions you ask about each draftee the more you question his ability to make it on the next level.” Only one thing is sure, and that is that DellJuan Pearson will go #1 overall. Coming straight from high school Pearson is a once in a lifetime talent and will be a franchise player for whoever is lucky enough to win the lotto.
Here is a position by position look at the 2022 BBS Draft…
Centers…
Alejandro Papadopol… C 6'9'' 300 21 A- C- C+ C- C+ A… Papadopol is a big time inside scorer that offers little else. He flashes glimces of possessing upside but most think his propensity to eat will knock him out of the league by the time he’s 30.
Shawn Carter… C 7'1'' 218 19 B C+ F C+ C+ A… He is a poor athlete with height, but less then ideal strength. Decent defender who should become better but he isn’t a big time player and shouldn’t be taken before 15 or 18.
Theodore Lawson… C 7'1'' 290 21 B- D C- C A A… Lawson is a stud rebounder. An absolute beast on the glass, Lawson is extremely strong, but doesn’t use his strength well on the offensive end. There are also concerns that Lawson played so well in college because of the lack of competition he faced.
Apple Dupree… C 6'11'' 233 19 C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A… Dupree can’t be 19. He looks to be at least 30. Scouts don’t trust him or his agent. Plus, he listens to Coldplay during workouts and cries after interviews. He’s a freak!
Lavar Dial… C 7'4'' 240 22 B- C- C B B- C…and Nigel Dial… C 7'3'' 225 22 B- C- D+ B- C+ B… Stanford twins strike again. These big men offer average ability and upside. Both could be solid, but it depends on whether they are drafted by the same team. If they are drafted by the same team and spend one year with that team they will get a +25 to real potential. If they are drafted separately I will give them a -25 to their real potential.
Patrick McDuffie… C 6'11'' 285 22 B- C+ D C+ B- B… McDuffie is a solid workman like big man that can score and rebound some. His upside is limited, but he should be a solid bench option in BBS.
Power Forwards
Ruslan Sergeyev… PF 6'7'' 225 19 B+ C- C- B+ C- A.. Sergeyev is just a nasty player. He is so physical it boarders on dirty. An intimidating defender Sergeyez will slap, hold, push and elbow to get an advantage. He exerts so much energy on defense it’s amazing he can be affective on offense. Very rugged inside scorer who tends to beat up his opponent on the defensive end so he has the advantage on the offensive end.
Sawyer Verschagen… PF 6'10'' 260 20 B+ C- C B- B- A… Verschagen is a big bodied player with solid scoring skills. Good post moves and strength make him a tough cover. He is a very good rebounder who should develop into an above average defender.
Jax Dalhausser… PF 6'9'' 190 19 B- C- C- B+ C+ A… Dalhausser is a very good athlete who isn’t a good basketball player yet. He reminds some scouts athletically of Chris Andersen. Good shot blocker. High energy player who dives for loose balls and gives big time effort, but his long range basketball potential might be limited.
Benjie Holman… PF 6'9'' 246 22 C+ B- C- B C A… Holman is wide body that prefers the perimeter. Not an especially good post player or rebounder, Holman likes to face the basket and shoot. Holman is already a solid defender and should be a good backup forward at least in BBS.
DeeAndre Weatherspoon… PF 6'9'' 236 20 C C C+ B B+ C… Weatherspoon is a one dimensional player who can just board and defend. Decent passing ability, but is a negative on the offensive end of the floor.
Small Forwards
DellJuan Pearson… SF 6'10'' 220 18 B B- C+ B C+ A The #1 prospect, and the #1 pick. Pearson is a LeBron James, Lance Stephenson type and will be a dominate player in the BBS for the next decade or so.
Daniel Johnson… SF 6'8'' 223 20 C A- B- C+ B+ A… Johnson is a big time player who loves to shoot, pass and board. DJ isn’t overly athletic but he is extremely intelligent and his basketball IQ is through the roof. He is an amazing shooter, ball handler and rebounder. He fashions his game after his idol, Larry Bird.
Andres Kemp… SF 6'8'' 225 19 B- C+ C B- C+ A… Kemp is a nasty defender that loves to intimidate his opposing number. In the mold of Serge Ibaka, Kemp is a sure fire top 8 selection and a definite starter in the BBS for a long time.
J.P. Breezey… SF 6'10'' 222 20 C+ B B- C+ B- A… Breezey is a step behind Pearson in not only his overall game, but his upside. In any other draft Breezey would be considered for the 1st pick and he will be an amazing selection anywhere in the top 5.
Shooting Guards
Luc Xavier… SG 6'7'' 220 20 C+ A C+ B- C+ A… Luc Xavier has taken a huge tumble recently with poor workouts and rumors of drug use. An impressive outside shooter, Xavier has seemed to taken the summer off and scouts are beginning to question his work ethic and desire to be a pro.
Omar Rickards… SG 6'4'' 225 27 B+ B+ C C+ C- D… Rickards is an interesting story and a big time scorer. Unfortunately he is also very over aged and has limited upside. Still, he should be a solid scorer for someone.
Ricky Washington… SG 6'6'' 210 21 B B- C C+ C A… Washington’s stock has also dropped recently due mostly to poor workouts. One scout says he has some severe knee damage that needs to be repaired. Others say he should be okay and that his poor showings haven’t affected their view of him.
Kendall Blair… SG 6'4'' 200 21 B+ C C C+ C A… Blair was known in college as a big time ball hog. Blessed with amazing quickness, Blair has fallen in love with his offense game and doesn’t work hard at defense at all. Blair also has trouble hanging onto the ball leading to tons of turnovers.
Point Guards
Mike Smith… PG 5'10'' 176 20 B+ D B+ C+ D A… Smith has amazing quickness and jumping ability which makes him a great inside scorer for a smaller player. Unfortunately Smith is a horrible shooter from 10 feet out and it has raised huge concerns about his ability to make it in the pros.
Drew Shelton… PG 6'4'' 189 19 C C+ B C D+ A… Shelton is the perfect example of someone leaving school too early. A big talent, Shelton really should’ve stayed and worked on his offense. Shelton fashions his game after Jason Kidd but he is a big stiff and cant move or defend like Kidd did in his prime.
Timmy Mason… PG 6'2'' 175 23 C A- C C+ C- A… Mason is a big time shooter that is too small to play shooting guard. Extremely quick, Mason is a great catch and shoot player and should be a solid pick late in Round 1.
Terrance Willis… PG 6'1'' 185 22 C C+ C+ B D+ A… Willis is a solid college player that should be a nice backup at the next level. A good late Round 1 selection.
Mikhail Fingers… PG 6'2'' 190 19 C+ B B- C+ C- A… Fingers is a very immature player who isn’t ready for the pros. Amazing skills but just doesn’t have the work ethic or the right people surrounding him to make it big in BBS.
Doctor Desmond… PG 6'7'' 190 19 C- D+ B B C- A… Another big time point guard prospect that can’t shoot. It doesn’t usually translate well to the pros and most don’t think it will in this case either.
