Welcome to the Gripe with Pig. Today I will gripe about something in BBS which has been bothering me for some time and that is the Contract Year. Initially this was a great idea that I supported due to it being experimental and initial feelings that it would promote more competitive teams in BBS. At the time of implementation we also had a laundry list of more then qualified GM's which made the idea more justified.
Today I stand here saying that in it's current state the Contract Year is counter-productive in nature and actually makes BBS less competitive. BBS teams are in circles right now. I have come to the philosophy that under the current system the great teams will always be great and the poor teams will always be poor. Long-term that is the case. Teams like the Knicks and Bucks will always be successful because they will always be able to take advantage of teams like the Warriors and Clippers when they choose to rebuild. Teams like the Knicks and the Bucks will always be much more better equipped when they enter there rebuilding process then the Warriors or Clippers who most likely just dealt all there youth for grizzled vets in order to stay in the league and are just going to repeat the same 4 year process they just did.
Yes there are ways to escape this ongoing cycle of 1-2-3-CY for the poorer teams. They are to either get lucky in the draft or in FA. Teams can't even rebuild properly with fear they will be fired if they do so in a manner which they deem appropriate. Pressure of being fired will make GM's take bad contracts in order to just scrap by.
We look at the CY as a measure of a GM's ability. To an extend I think that thought process is flawed. One bad mistake with your team (my case for example) and you can be sucked in to this contract year loop forever. I can guarantee you for a fact that if teams had a 5 year rebuilding loop instead of a 3 year loop that the league would overall be competitive as a whole. There would be no excuses for a failing franchise. Teams who had made a mistake or two in the past could finally create a franchise that could be a competitor.
Now I am not saying teams like the Knicks or the Bucks would not be competitors anymore because they both have very great GM's. However it is frustrating to keep fucking up your team dynamic and growth in order to make a winner for a small window which more times than not be a championship caliber team.
All I really want is some flexibility with how I create a team. I feel shackled as a GM that I have such a small window to create a winner in. I know I wouldn't be this fucking terrible if I could watch my younger teams grow longer and am being punished still for a mistake I made 12 season ago.
The big incentive for the CY was the laundry list of great GM's we had on the waiting list when it was first created. We do not have that luxury anymore.
My gripe basically is that the bottom tier of the league doesn't have enough time to get out of the bottom tier. Out of the GM's who have done shitty jobs in this edition I feel like my voice is most qualified to speak on the matter so hopefully you guys take this with a grain of salt. Making moves that fuck you over in value in order to win isn't healthy overall for the league. So I ask for Spencer and the league to at least consider extending the CY or abolishing it all together.
I might of hit the nail on the head or missed it completley. There are flaws with the current system though.
