Today is the move-in day for the High School students at Columbia! I have to be in my room until all of my kids (I have 9 of them) get here. So I am gonna live blog for the 0 people that care. Basically just trying to make up for not being active since I started my job.

First kid got here about 20 minutes ago. Jared P. from Texas. He is the president of his schools gay-straight alliance. Seemed kinda interesting. Went into his room to unpack and hasn't been out yet.

Second kid comes in- Alex G. from Clarence, NY. His parents are typical ultra conservative people and immediately start badgering me with questions. He seems shy and shouldn't be a problem

Just a quick background - These HS kids are here to take college level courses taught by Columbia University professors in order to get letters of recommendation when they apply to college. I have responsibilities both as a Program Assistant and Resident Assistant. As an RA I have to make sure they go to class, are back for curfew in time, and follow sign out procedures and other rules. As Program Assistant I am working with the Midday Activities which is a 2.5 hour block the kids have break between classes. We offer them a variety of activities. Everyday there are going to be sports in the quad, video games, and general arts and crafts stuff. Each day will have a specific theme. For instance, Monday is smoothie day, Wednesday is college panel discussion, and Thursday is political panel discussion. We are also going to have a large ultimate frisbee game and dance lessons this week too.

The program costs 6 grand to come here for one session- 3 weeks. How much of that is yours? lolz, not enough. We don't get paid that much, but the actual value of the program you take away is really high. We also have to plan trips at least once a week, forgot to mention that. It can be anything worth doing in the NYC area and all of our expenses are reimbursed. Baseball games, restaurants trips, museums, broadway shows- basically anything. Plus we get free room and board which isn't that cheap in the Upper West Side. Free meals, etc.
