WINNERS:
Toronto Raptors
Draft Picks: Billy Smith #10 overall B D+ D+ C+ C+ A | Tom Kerwin #36 overall B B C B C B
The Raptors enjoyed perhaps the best draft out of any team picking in the first and second rounds. They nabbed a relatively raw product in Billy Smith only to see him blossom in TC. Then, 25 picks later they took Kerwin, who later would end up being the draft steal of 2026 in the second round.
Washington Wizards
Draft Picks: Jim Barnett #12 overall B- B+ C A- C A | Jerry Chambers #42 overall B- B- D C+ B B
The Wizards, like the Raptors, have been rather majestic with their draft history in recent years. This year, the Wiz added another crop of talented guards in Barnett and Chambers. Both figure to be intregral parts of Washington's future and should be regulars in the backcourt rotation this year.
Miami Heat
Draft Picks: Clyde Lee #3 overall B- D+ D+ B+ A- A | Bill Melchionni #19 overall C- B+ A- C+ C- B | Julian Hammond #23 overall B- C- D B- B C
Following the Ebener administration, Chipper has done a nice job taking over the Miami Heat and starting with fresh, new direction. After seeing Oscar Robertson and David Bing go consecutively, Lee dropped to their laps at No. 3 and picked up a solid PG in Melchionni at No. 18. Not bad for a team that is looking to contend in another 2-3 years.
LOSERS:
Utah Jazz
Draft Picks: Dick Snyder #5 overall B+ C B C C+ B | John Beasley #13 overall B- C D+ C+ B- B | Stew Johnson #33 overall B- B- C C+ C+ B
After a deal that sent the #4 pick overall to the Nets in exchange for #5 and #13, the Jazz seemed to have done well for themselves in getting an extra lotto pick. Only to see that Snyder's scouted potential dip to a B and see no improvement while Beasley seems to be one of the few busts of the big men crop this year seeing his ratings and potential drop significantly. The Jazz salvaged their pride with Johnson at #33 overall but Snyder and Beasley getting worse hurt them more.
Dallas Mavericks
Draft Picks: Donnie Freeman #14 overall B B+ C C+ C B | Ollie Carter #42 overall C+ B C+ B C C
After forfeiting this pick, in a unprecedented move, Freeman went back to the free agent market and scored a 3 year, $17 million dollar contract from the T-Wolves. Not only do the Mavericks lose Freeman, who went up outside in TC, but he now goes to a division rival who will have to face them four times this season.
Los Angeles Clippers
Draft Pick: Tab Jackson #18 overall C+ B C- C C B
Clippers management tried to shop this pick for a while during the draft with little interest in it. After seeing Jackson drop to #18, the Clippers quickly picked him up. However, in training camp, his potential not only dropped a grade but his defense as well. Jackson still can be a decent player but it may take him a bit longer.
