When recently asked at a Detroit news conference if this would be his last season, Derrick Rose, a six time MVP, hinted at the thought of retirement. "Man, i'm humbled just to be in this position. Not many people even get the chance to accomplish what i've done, and for that i'm forever thankful."
Approaching the age of 38 the always calm, cool, and collective Rose has been nothing short of spectacular in his illustrious 18-year career. Some of his accolades include a 2011 Slam Dunk Crown, two years with all defensive team honors and career averages of 24ppg, 10apg, 6rpg, 2spg with a remarkable 47% field goal percentage. Also, Rose is the only player in BBS history to record 10 consecutive seasons as an All-League First Teamer, none more sweeter than 2015 when he was Playoff MVP and led the New York Knicks to a championship, all while averaging career highs in points and assists, at nearly 30 and 12 respectively.
"He's a pure legend of the game. He's defined the new era of point guards for years to come." First year Pistons owner Kevin Brunk states after being asked what Rose means to his franchise. "You want him to score, he'll score. You want him to pass, he'll pass. Lock down a defender, no problem. The one attribute that seperates him from the rest however, is his leadership skills, on and off the court. The guy is an unbelievable roll model and leads by example on how to be successful at that position. Thats something you don't teach. I've only been here for a year, but many people forget I worked with Rose as VP of basketball operations in New York for six seasons. What i've learned from just being around him everyday are values that i've applied in my daily life, and what I preach for others to follow if they want to be successful in this industry." Brunk also stated that if Rose wanted to retire, he's earned every right to do so and the Pistons organization would support his decision 100%.
No matter what Rose decides to do, theres' no questioning his accomplishments, his leadership, and his desire to succeed. He will be a great loss for the game, but will continue to be a roll model for kids, and even current players, for decades to come.
