Out East, speculation is swirling in Boston about their current situation and the future of their club. For starters, GM C.C. inked former Rutgers guard Myles Taylor to one of the richest contracts in BBS history at the age of 30 during the past off-season. His contract was worth more than $180 million at the time runs through 2033. Taylor, who had injury plagued 2026 season, is still a top 5 point guard in the league when healthy. However, Taylor’s big contract doesn’t help the situation with other stars on the Celtics’ roster. Free agent Forward Amon Cummings will command max dollars as he tests the free agent market this off-season as will guard Deon Price next year if he decides not to re-up with the team. Coupled together, these three players may put the Celtics financial flexibility in limbo in the future should they stick together. The Portland Blazers and Toronto Raptors showed interest and inquired about Taylor’s services towards the trade deadline last year. But for now, the Celtics will probably stay put and see what happens with Cummings and Price.
The 2027 draft marks the first time the Minnesota Timberwolves have held the No. 1 overall pick since 2012. In that year, the Wolves took the highly touted Austin Rivers straight out of the University of Florida. This year, the Wolves and GM Ashes took another franchise type guard in Jerry West out of West Virginia. The big difference here is that Rivers’ started his career at the mere age of 19 while West is coming into the league at his prime and at the age of 28. Either way, the Wolves have a keeper and a player they can build around for another 5-6 seasons at least ala Austin Rivers and the Duk Young-Bak.
Speaking of Bak, the sensational scorer out of Korea was recently dealt again, from the Indiana Pacers to the Golden State Warriors. Bak, who captured yet another scoring title this past season, will be the focal point for the Contract Year Warriors, who are managed by GM Brendan ‘Pig’ McEneaney, was under heavy scrutiny last year when he dealt Bay favorite Rick Barry in exchange for Diego Alvarez and Ha Lau Wa. McEneaney was quoted in saying, " I don't see the difference between Alvarez and Barry right now. Barry will probably be a better player but damn Wa is fucking solid. " That move didn’t seem to materialize in wins as they failed to crack 30 wins and finished second to last in the Pacific division. Now, Bak comes in exchange for Alvarez and Dave Bing, who was the Warrior’s lotto pick last season. Will the dividends pay off this season and make it a 40+ win season for the Warriors? It could be tough as the Warriors barely made it through their last CY encounter.
