Not sure what breed to get but I'm leaning towards a Shiba Inu. Any other suggestions?

Boxer. Coolest dogs ever. They can be a handful, though.

Breeders=poo. All about rescued dogs. That's a good breed, though, from what I can tell. Dogs are a lot of work so make sure it's not a whim. If I were gonna get a breed, I really like golden retrievers and labs. Pretty standard stuff, and seem close to what you're into.
"The Shiba has an independent nature and can be reserved toward strangers but is loyal and affectionate to those who earn his respect. At times aggressive toward other dogs."
Sounds somewhat like my dog. He hates other dogs and loves people. Not a big deal except for on walks and things like that.
Are you gonna be the sole owner? That can be tough. Last semester, my GF's housemate bought a dog. She went out every weekend and the dog was a puppy. Really hyperactive. We would have to take care of that dog at 2 AM on the weekends when she went out without giving a shit if the dog was asleep/needed to go out out, etc.

This summer, my sister took in a stray dog that followed her home. Deaf pitbull. Really cute and loyal dog. One of her housemates at school said no way to having a dog though, and when she brought him home, he got really confused and kinda went nuts. Jagger (our dog) was growling a lot at him because it was another dog in his house, and so this dog got really defensive and started going after anyway who came near my sister. Pretty shitty situation. We didn't know what to do, so one of my sister's friends took him home temporarily while they tried to find a house for him. They were gonna give him to a no-kill pound, but at the last possible minute, they found a home for him. That's my story.

We have a Newfoundland and a Golden retriever. Love them both.
Newfoundland's are the shit though. My dog is 120 pounds but the nicest dog there is.

Shiba Inu:
The Shiba is an alert, lively and bold dog. Loving, kind, trainable, brave and clean. Confident, fearless and courageous. The Shiba is agile, fast and playful. Charming and open. They bark little and bond closely with their handler. It may be a bit reserved with strangers but children do not usually cause any problems, for Shiba's make good companions for them. Socialize this breed well as a puppy. If the Shiba is not completely convinced that its handler can handle the pack leader position and regards himself as stronger minded they will become a bit stubborn as they will believe they need to make up their own rules. Proper human to canine communication is essential. They do well with other dogs and cats if they are raised with them from puppyhood. Don't trust this dog around other small pets such as rodents and small birds. Big birds such as parrots may be okay. The Shiba is an easy dog to travel with. Be careful during hunting season as the dog looks like a fox and may be mistaken for one. It is not usually a reliable off-leash dog, especially if they do not regard their owners as a strong pack leader. It is easy to housebreak these dogs because they are naturally fastidious. Make sure you are this dog's firm, confident, consistent pack leader, providing daily pack walks to avoid behavior issues.
Sounds like a great dog if you're a leader.

Maybe the Shiba Inu isn't good for you.....I don't think you could really be an effective pack leader!
It really depends on your lifestyle though. Austrailian Shepards are great dogs...They are active though. The listen better than any dog I've ever known. If you are in a condo and away a lot probably not the best dog to get though. Beagles are actually very loving if you are looking for a buddy. Don't let them outside off a leash though because they have one hell of a run aways as fast as possible instinct.

hellhound: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HellhoundA hellhound is a dog of Hell. Hellhounds typically have features such as black fur color, glowing red eyes, super strength or speed, ghostly or phantom characteristics, and sometimes even the ability to talk. Hellhounds are often associated with fire, and may have fire-based abilities and appearances, hellhounds appear out of nowhere suddenly and have been known to vanish in a blink of an eye. They are often assigned to guard the entrances to the world of the dead, such as graveyards and Indian burial grounds, or undertake other duties related to the afterlife or the supernatural, such as hunting down lost souls or guarding a supernatural treasure. As legend goes, if one happened to see the hellhound three times, he or she will die an abrupt and unseen death. Cool.

Basically, everyone here is biased towards the breed that they own.
Conclusion: Dogs are awesome.
