OK so I literally know nothing about the property market in New York City. What are the different sort of areas within Manhattan like residentially? And what sort of prices would you be expecting to pay for say a two bed appartment in the nicer areas? Ideally I'd like to know prices to buy, and then how much rent you'd be able to get from them.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

manhattan is huge... you have upper manhattan which = Harlem, Hamilton Heights, etc.. cheapest in this area is about $1100 a month roughly 677 pounds a month but believe me you don't want to live here.
If you want to move to like the fancier parts of Manhattan like Chelsea and all that you won't find anything for less than $2500 a month and at $2500 a month you wont be getting anything special either. In areas like Chelsea, Grammercy Park, the Village, you'll be looking at $3000 and up for a decent 2 bedroom or roughly 1846 pounds a month

oh I mis read you're post.. you're looking to purchase? Um, yeah you won't find anything less than half a million dollars.. unless you go to a shitty run down area of Manhattan like Chinatown or Upper Manhattan.

just to give you an idea... a 2 bedroom property on 108th Street is going for $559,000.
Now double that price for areas in Mid-Town/Village/Soho area and you're looking at a million dollars.

Yeah I can probably shell out half a mil USD for a place. I've got a hefty deposit to put down so the only issue is mortgage... I'm not sure what it's like for an "overseas investor".
To put it into context, I'm looking at the moment for places in London where the prices are stupidly inflated. I'm looking around the £350k mark here for a two-bed, and can rent them out for around £1400 a month.
Just wondered what it was like over in NYC because realisitcally speaking, I'd love to move there and if I have an opportunity to do so, I will try to go for it.

you will not find anything decent for half a mill in Manhattan, Manhattan. Like mid-town areas and all that. I mean, I'm sure there are half a mill places in the areas, but they are probably very old and not very well kept.
I would suggest moving to places like Hoboken, New Jersey or Jersey City, New Jersey. It's the "new thing" for people who want to live and work in NYC but they do not want to pay NYC real-estate money.
Though, there are some very expensive apartments in both Hoboken and JC.. some going well over a million dollars.

So what are these "better places" to live btw. I mean, what about round Central Park? Assuming I'm going to be working in the financial district too, I'd need somewhere with an easy commute?

It's things like this which is why I ask - I know little about places to live round NYC. When you say 10mins to Manhattan, where abouts? LIke I said earlier, assume I'll be working in the financial district.

For 500K, he could get some shit in Hoboken and Jersey City that is a million times nicer though. I wouldn't pay 500k for an OK/shitty apartment just because it's right in Chelsea but that's just me.

LIke I said earlier, assume I'll be working in the financial district. You take the PATH train from either Jersey City or Hoboken and it is literally 10 mins into Manhattan. Hoboken you get the Empire State Building view of the Hudson and from Jersey City you get the WTC view of the Hudson. I love Hoboken, my parents actually want to move there. www.panynj.gov/path/schedule.html

Hoboken is really nice, and there is a path train conveniently located close to the 'heart' of the city. Literally 15-20 min away from NY by train. there are alot of young people living there
or you could always move to Bayonne
