I saw Tiger's article in UOSLR and holy shit was that impressive. I don't think I've written papers in college that long. It inspired me to write an article in BBS, but then I remembered I suck at writing articles. I also have 0 RC's. Enjoy!
DETROIT, Michigan-- There was very little speculation and intrigue entering the 2031 BBS Draft. A relatively consensual Number 1 pick in Artis Gilmore was made by Detroit GM Martinez, while the remaining GM's had to play a guessing game with the rest of the field. Detroit was lucky enough to move up three spots in the lotto to nab Gilmore, while a disillusioned Pig dropped to fourth, surely taking a bottle of his favorite alcohol down with him.
When asked about how he felt when it was announced that his team would be making the Number 1 overall pick, Detroit GM Christian Martinez had this to say: "You know, I obviously wasn't expecting to move up that much in the draft, so I was using my time to explain to GST GM Tigertecz the finer points of living in places like Hoboken and Jersey City. Really excellent places, honestly. It's what all the hip, cool kids are doing these days." Despite his enthusiasm in landing the top pick, Martinez remained skeptical in Gilmore's ability to help his team right away stating "I don't know if Artis Gilmore is going to be able to help right away though... this is going to be one crazy off-season."
With the Pistons in the unenviable position of being in the Contract Year, they needed to see something from Gilmore during Preseason or he would surely be shipped off for an impact player. Needless to say the 7'2" center from Gardner Webb has not disappointed. After impressing in Preseason, he has continued to excel in a fashion rarely seen by BBS rookies. Through 27 games Gilmore is averaging 20 points on 45% from the field, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks per game, all the while competing for these statistics against a still effective Marcus Bigelow who is rebounding 12 per as well as blocking 3.2 shots per game. With the season roughly 1/3 over it is hard to argue that early season inflation is making Gilmore look better than he actually is.
20/13/4 is impressive for any big man, let alone a big man that has no experience and only one TC under his belt. At this point, it may seem that the sky is truly the limit for Gilmore. While the rest of the lotto picks have struggled to the level of intense play in the BBS Gilmore has slid into his role quite well. The only disconcerting part about Gilmore is his drop in scouted potential as well as his slightly above average TOPG. But then again, who the hell needs potential when you are already that good? Surely Gilmore needs to improve if he wants to be mentioned amongst the great big men of BBS past such as DeJuan Blair and Dwight Howard, but Chris has made the bold statement that Artis Gilmore> BBS, meaning he should surely ascend to the uppermost echelon of sim league players in no time at all.
As for now, Detroit sits in 5th place in the East at 16-11, in the most comfortable position of all of the Contract Year teams. Barring some sort of season ending injury to Bigelow or Gilmore(or Marty quitting), you should expect to see Christian Martinez GM'ing a BBS team for the foreseeable future. Some may say that he got lucky moving up in the lotto, however Martinez has put together a team that can certainly win 40 games and make the playoffs.
