The 2025 Draft marked the start of Retro for BBS. There was lots of scrutiny from certain GM's named Play about how much retro sucked. For the most part, the transition into retro has been one that has been certainly exciting and interesting. We've seen the emergence of superstars such as Bob Love and Jerry West. Which one of the 7 drafts since we've gone retro have been the best and who is the best player since the emergence of retro? Here's my approach:
2025 Draft-
Best Player- Bob Love(3rd overall)
Love is out of this world. Although he has never blocked more than 2.5 shots per game in his career you can't argue with 33 points and 13 rebounds per game. Certainly a top 5 player in the league and has one of the best set of ratings you will ever see a big man have. Teamed up with Jerry West, these two will be the reason why the New York Knicks make a deep run into the playoffs this year
Runner Up- Rick Barry(1st overall)
A/A scoring is about as rare as it comes. Barry struggled at the start of the season, but has picked up his %'s and PPG. For five straight seasons Barry averaged more than 28 ppg, which makes this drop in production even harder to take at only 28 years of age. Maybe Barnett is taking away from his production, but it seems that he could be utilized better.
Honorable Mention- Gail Goodrich(4th overall)
You dont really hear much about Gail because the Pacers are more or less mediocre. However, do not overlook Gail. Shooting 48/96/48 is incredibly efficient and he is one of the best ball stealers in the league. His TO's might be a little high, but he certainly makes up for it by creating TO opportunities of his own
2025 Recap- First Retro Draft! Outside of these top 3 guys there have been many disappointments. Cunningham is a one dimensional player, Sloan is average, and DVA and TVA were busts. Still, any draft that produces a top 5 player in the league can't be regarded as too big of a failure.
2026 Draft-
Best Player-Oscar Robertson(1st overall)
Another top 5 player in the league. Has come close to averaging a triple double for the past few seasons. Can really change the dynamic of any team that he is a part of. Currently a part of the playoff bound Suns, Oscar is averaging 30/9/5, while playing at SF.
Runner Up- Jim Barnett(12th overall)
One of the bigger steals since we've gone retro. Barnett has really slid into playing PG quite well. While his passing distribution is not amongst the top 10 in the league, he only turns the ball over 1.5 times per game and can shoot lights out. Probably the biggest reason the Wizards won the championships a few years back
Honorable Mention- Dick Snyder(5th overall)
One of the proverbial late bloomers, Snyder has been a product of the FBB weakness in which you can put a wing and play him at PG and he can be pretty damn good. Really a toss up here for third best in this draft.
2026 Recap- Once again, a pretty weak draft. But once again, when you have a top 5 talent in the league, you can't discount it as completely shitty.
2027 Draft
Best Player- Jerry West(1st overall)
The NBA logo is his likeness for a reason. This guy is amazing. To me he is arguably the best player in BBS. Incredibly efficient. Just look at this guy! 50/96/48. He could probably be doing more than 31 PPG too, but Bob Love is seemingly taking away a few shot opportunities a game.
Runner Up-Walt Frazier(2nd overall)
Boy do I hate this guy. Really exploded after he was traded. Granted I wasn't the Jazz GM, but it still pisses you off nonetheless. He looked like he was going to be the next Derrick Rose, but alas not all great looking youngins become absolute studs. All things considered, he is leading a Cavs team that many think is overachieving. His TO's are still not where you want to see them but 12.1 APG is elite. Combined with excellent percentages from the field as well as ball stealing proficiency, you have the second best player from this draft.
Honorable Mention- Charles Beasley (17th pick, 2nd Round) Phil Jackson (5th overall)
Beasley gets an honorable mention strictly because of how good he is and how late he was drafted. Gotta love the mid 2nd Round steals who can become franchise players. He got off to a slow start too this season with the Nets underperforming, but once Mark gets an active computer you can be sure that he will be simming quite well in no time.
Phil Jackson has steadily grown into a player that any GM would love to build around. Given his stats and age and likely potential you would have to put him amongst the top 10 in player value in the league.
2027 Recap- I love to see draft parity. Makes me happy to see a player like Beasley emerge from the middle of the second round to become a bonafide stud. Also, Jerry West is going to single handedly carry the Knicks to a championship, not Bob Love
2028 Draft
Best Player- Ron Boone(9th overall)
Tough one here between Jabali and Boone. Really think Boone is a more dynamic scorer and I also believe his TO's can be reduced to a respectable amount in the neat future. Teamed up with Beasley, the Nets should have a great backcourt threat for seasons to come.
Runner Up- Warren Jabali(2nd pick, 2nd Round)
Jordan has really run into something special here with Jabali. One look at him and you might say oh he has C+ defense, he isn't that great. You'd also be wrong according to most of those familiar with FBB. Everyone loves steals out of their guards and that is what Jabali offers. 2.0 SPG with C+ defense is pretty impressive. Besides guards don't need perimeter defense anyway.
Honorable Mention- Nate Thurmond(2nd overall)
Has good ratings, doesn't exactly sim up to them. He can block his fair share of shots and rebound, but his percentages are pretty poor.
2028 Recap- Weak shit here Spence. Hate to say it, but this might be the worst draft class since we have gone retro.
2029 Draft
Best Player-Kareem Abdul Jabbar(1st overall)
Never simmed up to his ratings but he has come into his own in the past couple seasons. Pretty pathetic that with A defense he has never blocked more than 2 shots per game in his career save this year. Still, his presence was made in the playoffs last year.
Runner Up- Jo Jo White(3rd overall)
Skillz loves trading players he hypes like crazy. Personally, I think he is going to regret it. Jo Jo really looks to be something special. He has shown significant improvements in each of his years in the league. I think aar got a steal.
Honorable Mention- Norm Van Lier(2nd overall)
Should be a critical part of the Lakers rebuild. Unfortunately for the Lakers he has proved to be a little too good for their tastes because he has allowed them to win games they shouldn't be winning. If his TO's continue to decrease he could become an elite PG
2029 Recap- Really a stacked draft at the top. The top six picks of this draft are all great or still have the potential to be. (KAJ, NVL, Jo Jo, Dandridge, Bingo, and Neal Walk) Great year to have any of the first few picks in this draft. Decent players were still available later in the lotto like Swift. Very rare to see the top six players have very little drop off.
2030 Draft
Best Player- Pete Maravich(3rd Overall)
Pistol Pete is really a dynamic scorer. His TO's are just a little on the side and for sake of being unbiased I am going to put him at the top of this draft. You also have to keep in mind he was one of if not the most important piece in the Celtics Championship run last year.
Runner Up- Nate Archibald(2nd Overall)
In terms of efficiency it's hard to find someone better than Tiny. He has come into his own as a scorer and is averaging over 10 assists per game while only turning the ball over 1.5 times per game. As Aaron mentioned earlier, he compares to the likes of DJ Augustin in how he can turn a team around.
Honorable Mention- Bob Lanier(1st Overall)
Lanier has been marred in Miami since he was drafted so you don't hear all that much about him. However, 22/11/2 blocks/1steal is good enough to land you on this list
2030 Recap- In back to back drafts the best 3 players were picked with the first three picks. Heard, Cowens, Issel, and Rudy T are respectable players, but no where near the level of the first 3. If you were lucky enough to land one of the top 3 picks, you got an asset to build a franchise around.
2031 Draft
Best Player- Artis Gilmore(1st overall)
Total franchise piece. Unbelievable talent. Bigelow and Gilmore single handedly carried the Pistons franchise through their conctract year. Dynamic shot blocker and rebounder, but needs to work on improving his percentages. Could be one of the best big men ever in BBS
Runner Up- Spencer Haywood(3rd overall)
Great Rebounder and Scorer, but his defense could use a little work(the reason I am writing this article.) Haywood has greatly benefited from Tiny Archibalds ball distributing skills and has proven that he is going to be a solid starter in BBS for a while to come
Honorable Mention- Austin Carr(8th overall)
Explosive TC's. Should still have really high potential. His stat line is pretty good for a second year player, but he is still very raw. However, Carr seems to be the kind of athlete that could become a better version of Beep Lane
2031 Recap- Really loved how Spence made a prospect that looked to be far and away the best and in some respects he is. But there are still many youngins who could reach the level that Gilmore has been playing at since Day 1 in this league.
2032 Draft
Best Player- Julius Erving(1st overall)
Dr. J has already proved to be a dynamic scorer and steals the ball well. TO's are high, just like every other rookie first option
Runner Up- Bob McAdoo 2nd overall
Hopefully he can help turn the Bulls around cause they are struggling mightily. Obviously still very raw. Looks to be headed in the right direction.
Honorable Mention- No fucking idea
2032 Recap- Too early to tell!
2025 Draft-
Best Player- Bob Love(3rd overall)
