Alright, so I'm with AT&T/Cingular and my 2 year plan is up. I want to get the Iphone but I'm not paying an extra $30 a month for the data plan and it is required.
Does anyone here know much about "jailbreaking" an iphone?
Basically, I have a sim card so I could buy an AT&T IPhone 3G off ebay for like $350.
My question is do I get it and then jailbreak it, and then it just works? I'm just not familiar with the pros/cons or know much about it honestly, figured someone here would know what's the deal.
Thanks

Thanks Play, I would really appreciate that. Another question is if I get it and jailbreak it, will I have internet access only in Wi-Fi areas? I assume that is the case but wanted to confirm.

I seriously advise against this if you keep the ATT service. Switch to TMobile and do it.

Well can you explain why? I can't take your advice unless you give me a reason lol

Because it's IMEI tracked by ATT.
Jailbreaking with ATT service is more for further expanding its somewhat limited options, not for bypassing the Data Charge. It's different if you wanted to completely disable the Data, but to attempt to get by on standard network service from ATT will not end well for you. Not to mention, Jailbreaking isn't even necessary to have the iPhone without a contract, it'll work just fine with just your ATT sim card; however, with both you will still be found out. It sounds scary and bullshit, but it's not. I know for an absolute fact it is not.
Now, if you're fine with using it's Data in Wi-Fi, then it is definitely possible, but I don't see why you'd go with that option, seems like a huge crutch for an otherwise impressive device. However, that's your prerogative.

I've heard that even using only the Wi-Fi isn't foolproof from Apple and ATT, but I haven't confirmed it.

I'll see if I can find out for sure tomorrow, though they usually don't like to talk about that kind of stuff at work.

You work for ATT? If so I have at least 5 questions for you about international options.

All I want is to be able to have my number and have Wi-fi where available. I'm sure I will just end up buying it from AT&T with the $30 data plan if your right and there is no way I can jailbreak it successfully.

Fuck that. I wish Apple had a reasonable policies on broken devices etc. Applecare is pretty much fucking worthless. It doesn't cover accidental damage and acts of God. That's pretty standard. Some companies offer accidental damage protection for an extra charge. Plus for the less computer proficient people, they get support for three years. It really isn't anything out of the ordinary.

That's the plan. Would it be possible to use my iPhone with a Taiwan service? More directed at Apple not whatever shitty Taiwanese service I get.
