After taking over as the new Lakers GM midway through the 05 season, Nanz tore the team apart after reaching the conference finals with the sense that that team could simply not win it all. During the 06 season the Lakers were nothing but an easy win to the mediocre and top teams of the league and after a terrible season they ended up with the second overall pick of the 06 draft. After some rough and sleepless nights, the Lakers decided to take LaMarcus Aldridge. “ We felt like he was the best player available to our team at two” Nanz explained. “ He is a hard worker and nice young man who is down to earth and we feel like he is a franchise type player to go alongside Smith. Plus, we went out got drunk and really bonded… He carried me home that night, what a classy man” Nanz wasn’t the only person who was excited about this new addition. Josh Smith, commented on the new Laker. “ He is just a TANK. We go out and have a good time and our one two punch lines to the ladies, well its getting better… Oh as a player? Yeah he‘s nice.”
The Lakers headed into the 2007 season in the right direction with two core players on their roster. Then, right before the start of the preseason , Nanz pulled the trigger on a trade he felt he could not let pass up. Rajon Rondo, the fifth player taken in the previous draft, was now a Laker. “ Rondo is a hell of player”, Nanz replied when asked about the deal “ He comes into the league with great abilities to handle and defend the ball. His offense is something that he has not developed yet, but with time we feel he will be able to improve a great amount. We gave up some nice pieces and picks but I think it worked out for the best. Plus I just love the little guy, you give him one drink and he is just dancing on every table he sees.”
The new LA Lakers head into the 2007 season with a great 3 piece core for the future. Expectations aren’t set high for these youngsters as of yet, but they know that their time is not too far away. Nanz comments on the future of this franchise. “ This season we really just want to see our young players develop some and nothing more. We want to see them get better throughout the season, game by game. Realistically we don’t expect to do much out in the west, we should be somewhere at the bottom of our conference. I think that next year is when you will see this team begin to start to climb the standings. We should be able to sign some key players to add around our three young stars and who knows maybe it might be four young stars depending on what happens in the draft ”
Fans have been patient, but they know that the future is near. People are excited to see this young team contend one day and that day should not be too far away.
