10 days in I arrogantly put my team as the 6th best in this whole damn league, and was told by a few GMs that was too high. 40 days later, sitting even higher than I presumed, the doubters still persist. Fuck 'em. We're doing it again. I might as well call this "Why the Wolves are Even Better Than Your Dumb Asses Realize Rankings." Lets get 'em done.
It's Lonely At the Top
#1 - New York Knicks
David West, just mere hours ago, held Shaq to a pathetic 5-18 shooting night as the Wolves steamrolled over the supposed "favorites" to win this years title. Outlawz is just setting up his own ironic demise with his championship trophy avatar and his boasts about Eli "Bitch" Manning and the Giants accomplishments. There's no denying this is the best team in the league. They have the best player in the league. And if they don't win the championship, especially after Outlawz talks them up like some unstoppable force, it's gunna get all Tom Brady face up in New York. I'm the gunslinger out West shooting for the Eastern juggernaut this time around buddy. Don't say I didn't tell you.
Legitimate Contenders
#2 - Milwaukee Bucks
Jordan refused to make an offer after multiple PMs about Marbury. He said he'd pass before either of us had made an offer. What the fuck is that? I still love this team. Okafor is a beast and plays his role perfectly, I have a feeling he's going to be one of the leagues better players in a few years. Of the B A- A- big guys, I like Okafor the most because of his shotblocking ability, if he improves his defense even in the slightest he could be a league leader in that category. Kobe and KG are awesome, and efficient, which is why Jordan needs a better PG to keep them at their natural positions, even just a slight upgrade over Tinsley/Blake.
#3 - Minnesota Timberwolves
I wanna spend a paragraph talking about Arthur Johnson. Johnson was a second round pick a few seasons ago with below average starting ratings outside of his inside scoring. After improving this aspect of his game in his first TC, I gave him some tester minutes to see what he could do. He made slight improvements later, again inside and also in his rebounding, and I started giving him more minutes, trying him out in the starting lineup at some points. Throughout he's provided solid scoring at a high percentages while maintaining reasonable turnovers, though not giving much else. See, Johnson is really only good at one thing. He scores inside at a high percentage. He's big, he gets to the freethrow line, he scores at a high clip. This season, he's averaging 11.1 PPG and 5.7 RPG in 18.4 MPG off the bench. Players like Arthur Johnson are the reason my team is 25 and 8, and your team with a bunch of big names and douchebags with pretty ratings who don't produce shit is not.
Dark Horses Who Are Better Than You Think
#4 - Dallas Mavericks
Come on guys. Lets be reasonable here. This team still has LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and a sick version of Darko Milicic. These guys are stacked. They need a point guard, but that's about it. To be honest, Krup just hasn't fine tuned his talent yet. He's got a relatively new roster on his hands without a series of players who have been major contributors for him over the years, such as Grant Hill, the recently shipped out Chandler, and late season addition Chauncey Billups. He needs some time to pursue trading options, address his one major weakness, and continue to stockpile role players. This team is going to be a title contender before the playoffs start. Everyone in this league should be aware of that after looking at their history.
#5 - Toronto Raptors
If I thought DJ really wanted to win, and I mean really fucking wanted it, wanted to go out and make the necessary deals, use his pieces and put a championship team around Al and Tony P, his team would have no ceiling. Sometimes when I'm bored I go to the Raptors roster and just look at Parker's ratings and numbers. I'm not even joking. He's a sim god, one of the most finely tuned point guards I've ever seen. And yes, DJ has some very nice looking youth in guys like Rudy Gay and Brandon Hunter. But Parker is there. Now. And he has the pieces where he could be acquiring Elton Brand. Now. Or could've gotten Tim Duncan last season. Or some other superstar or something ridiculous. I hate to say this about arguably the third best team in the league, but these guys should be better. Parker in a 7 game series is the biggest weakness the Knicks have. Just fucking get 'em DJ.
#6 - Portland Trailblazers
I'm a fucking asshole for forgetting this team last time I threw up these rankings. Basone has gone out and assembled a monster with his recent activity, and I think his team stands out far more than some of the Eastern powerhouses. Kristic is a top 5 center in this league, putting up 23, 12 and 3 while controlling his turnovers, Bibby is a sick passer and solid all around point, Artest is an absolute beast and Sheed will fill a defensive gap if nothing else when he returns. I'm not sold on the way other teams are made up, on their roleplayers or the type of system they're trying to put into place. I'm sold on this team. I like what they do. My bad about last time DB.
Illegitimate Pretenders Who Are Worse Than They Seem
#7 - Miami Heat
Man, fuck this team. They're winning games by an average of 1.7 points right now, put up 108 points per game but only shoot 45.1% from the field, run two one dimensional shotblockers in their frontcourt and feature the most turnover prone player in the league as their point guard. I don't care about Ray and Vince, VC has been a bitch since he started telling opponents plays the Raptors were about to run in the middle of games (this actually happened) and Ray is a piece of shit, generally speaking. This team doesn't have the horses. They're #7 by default, because they have a good record and name players and some decent depth. But FUCK this team.
#8 - Sacramento Kings
Not quite as harsh an assessment as last time, but I just don't think these guys are the second best team in the West. I think they'll finish the season around the 6 or 7 seed. Kidd and Dermarr are both performing very poorly at this point, and relying so heavily on defense and three players, two of whom in Bosh and Lee are relatively unproven, will likely not allow the Kings to keep up their current success. I still like them a lot outside of Kidd though, Lee and McDyess are two of my favorite guys in this league.
Coming on Strong ... Soon
#9 - Detroit Pistons
The East better watch the fuck out. This team is really good. They're going to start rolling sometime in the next few sims, start consistently pulling 3-1 and 4-2 sims. Reilly will make a few more trades that go more under the radar than his rapes earlier this week, just acquiring small pieces to fill in his rotation, maybe upgrading Terry at the point. Then they'll start picking up the pace, Shard and AI will begin to cook, Big Ben will show why he's such a damn valuable sim league center, and the next thing you know they've won 45 games and are sitting at the #4 seed and Outlawz is thinking to himself "fuck does this team match up really well with me" and ... you all see this coming right? This team scares me more than any in the league.
#10 - Seattle Supersonics
And meanwhile out West ...
Seriously, Aar has TMac, Beasley, Chandler, young guys with potential and a fucking slew of valuable picks. If he wants to start winning games, this team will win some games. I'm not sure of his intentions yet, but his slaughter in the TMac deal and potential to be sick this year is enough for me. This team could be real good in two sims time.
