Re-Doing the Drafts – 2001 Edition
The inaugural 2001 BBS rookie draft produced super-star point guard, Tony Parker. After jumping up from a projected 9th pick to land the number 1 and subsequently, Parker, Toronto have held onto the quick and nimble Frenchmen and have developed him into the organisations franchise player. A worthy number 1 pick who has developed into one of the finest players in the BBS today.
Outside of Parker, you have Joe Johnson who was taken 3rd overall by Golden State. Johnson has developed into a solid scorer, defender and now with the Phoenix Suns, a potential perennial all-star.
After the aforementioned two standouts, Tyson Chandler and DeSanga Diop are the only other two other notable players who came out of the 2001 draft. Cases can be made for Jason Richardson, Zach Randolph, Pau Gasol and Samuel Dalembert (who was taken at the back end of the lottery), however all have grown into role players on their respective teams.
Original Draft Order
1. Tony Parker PG...Toronto
2. Jason Richardson SG...Indiana
3. Joe Johnson SG...Golden State
4. Pau Gasol PF...Miami
5. Tyson Chandler C...New York
6. Richard Jefferson SF...Phoenix
7. Gerald Wallace SF...Utah
8. Zach Randolph PF...LA Lakers
9. Mehmet Okur PF...Memphis
10. DaSagana Diop C...Seattle
11. Kwame Brown PF...New Orleans
12. Samuel Dalembert C...New Jersey
13. Jamaal Tinsley PG...Atlanta
Revised Draft Order
1. Tony Parker 0
Has developed into a super-star, was a clear cut pick then and still is.
2. Joe Johnson +1
Jumped up one spot, many argued his case for #2 on draft day so no real surprise.
3. Tyson Chandler +2
A great shot-blocker/defender, only player from this class to be an important factor in a championship.
4. DaSagana Diop +6
An excellent pick at the time by the Sonics, has grown into a similar mould as Chandler.
5. Jason Richardson –3
A very disappointing pick, has had some great TC’s but also some poor ones, a solid 2 man.
6. Zach Randolph +2
Randolph has been a dependable scorer for a few years now, still not a great shot-blocker.
7. Pau Gasol –3
Another disappointing pick, he looked great in his first few years however is now an overpaid big.
8. Samuel Dalembert +4
Was always going to develop into a solid shot-blocker, another great pick by the Sonics.
9. Richard Jefferson – 3
Didn’t develop as expected however has been a key role player in New York for a few seasons.
10. Jamaal Tinsley +4
A reliable point guard who has been a great replacement or starting PG for a lesser team.
11. Gerald Wallace -4
Expectations were high, didn’t quite turn into the defensive stopper he was touted to become.
12. Kwame Brown –1
Brown was a gamble and it didn’t pay off. He was either going to be solid or terrible, obviously he is the latter.
13. Mehmet Okur –4
A scrub who doesn’t see minutes, was a surprising pick even on draft day.
