The All-Overlooked Team
Although I often find myself navigating my way through the most overpaid and overrated congestion of players the sim world has ever seen (I have found that BBS GM’s seem to over-pay more than other leagues), there are still a few players taking the court each week who are deserved of a lot more money than what they are receiving.
There are a number of explanations as to why players find themselves under-paid in a league which seems to be overflowing with over-paid hacks. There are several reasons for this, however the most common theory is what is known as the ‘name-factor’. This factor is prevalent in all leagues and details the association with a player, a team and a ‘round-about’ salary. This does not happen all the time (see Nenad Kristic), however a majority of under-paid stars aren’t graced with such prestigious names as ‘Carmelo Anthony’ or ‘Allen Iverson’. Surely ‘Maurice Williams’ doesn’t deserve more than $7,000,000 a year? No way should ‘Desmond Mason’ receive a maximum contract? All of these statements are unconsciously embedded in our minds when making free agent offers.
The other reason behind under-paid stars is a the ‘weakness outweighs strength’ factor. This example is epitomised through Maurice Williams of the New York Knicks. Williams has had 3 excellent seasons in New York. He is currently averaging close to 17, 9 and 5 and was instrumental in New Yorks championship winning team, yet his defensive weakness (the ‘name-factor’ also comes into play here) scares people away.
Without further ado, here is the BBS’ inaugural ‘All-Overlooked Team’ (or underrated team or the A2J team).
C: Michael Olowokandi
There are so many over-paid and over-glorified big men in the BBS I can’t even be bothered talking about it. If a centre has the potential to block more than 1.5 shots per game, they are given a $10,000,000 1 year contract. Michael Olowokandi of the Sacramento Kings is earning a little over 2 and a half million dollars this year and for that, puts up 15.0ppg, 12.7rpg and 2.4bpg on a winning Kings team.
PF: Ronny Turiaf
It was hard to find a power forward, however I managed to find Ronny Turiaf of the Washington Wizards. Maybe he is here because nobody cares about Washington (hence him being over-looked) but I think it’s more to the point that the guy averages 11.6ppg, 8.9rpg and 1.0bpg on minimum salary. The Wizards are definitely getting their money’s worth here.
SF: Richard Jefferson
Jefferson earns roughly the mid-level exception from the Atlanta Hawks and in return, provides them with one of the best premier and drive defenders in the league. Jefferson was instrumental in New Yorks championship winning team and if he were a big man (or alternatively named Ron Artest), he would be getting a lot more attention. For Atlanta, Jefferson is averaging close to 12 and 7 along with 1.7spg and 1.0bpg.
SG: Desmond Mason
He probably isn’t that over-looked thanks to their GM A2J, but Mason, on his current salary, is definitely under-paid. Mason has one of the most impressive and unique rating lines in the league (A- C+ C+ A- C- C), puts up 19, 5 and 2 and only makes close to 6 and a half million dollars this year? In comparison, his team mate Ernest Brown who is averaging 4.9ppg and 1.3bpg in 30 minutes will be bringing home $28,000,000 over the next 2 years. Insane.
PG: Maurice Williams
Williams is the Marcus Taylor (minus the scoring and the excellence) of BBS2000. Williams averaged 14, 7, 4 and only 2 turnovers per game for the championship winning Knicks and is currently putting up even better numbers for the new look Knickerbockers at the moment however is only earning $6,000,000 this year. Dare I say, his value would be even lower than his yearly wage!
