An Early Look at the Contract Year Teams
*These points will go to Blue after I write the other 2 articles for him. I will owe him 2 RCs*
For the first time in the newest edition of BBS, we could see one or more GMs fired due to the contract year. The Contract Year is a BBS original, one that forces teams to win 40 games at least once every four years. This rule was implemented in an effort to limit the amount of years that one team could “tank” or rebuild, thus creating a bit more realism. To date, many teams have flirted with contract year disaster, but none have yet to actually be fired. That could all change this season.
The 2010 season has three teams in the contract year: Indiana (managed by nova), LA Clippers (managed by Galo), and Denver (managed by ducky). None of these three teams have had particularly good success in this version of BBS, although each can boast of having at least something going for them (except Galo and Nova, LOL). Let’s take a closer look at what each team has done over the last three years, as well as their offseason moves and their chances of winning forty games.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets are currently sitting at 18-6 and seem like a lock to win their 40 games. Ducky has done a very good job in this league, mainly due to his fleecing of Greg in the deal that sent a young Dwight Howard to the Nuggets. Dwight’s current ratings (B+/A+/A big man ratings) are star-worthy, and Ducky has surrounded him with two extremely productive veterans in Jermaine O’Neal and Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk’s defense has been questioned, but he actually saw an increase in this category this offseason and is completely lighting it up offensively. JO has always been a terrific offense player. Ducky’s ability to play Dirk/JO/Dwight at the 3/4/5 and employ an inside focus causes matchup problems. Not only will he survive the contract year, but he has a realistic shot to win the Western Conference (but he won’t).
Verdict: He stays.
Indiana Pacers
The Pacers are a really interesting team to look at. On the one hand, they do have good individual talent. Hinrich, T-Mac, ‘Melo, and Caron Butler all rate from good to great. He also has a solid Rasheed Wallace. Yet, the Pacers sit at 11-15 an outside of the top-8 in an extremely weak Eastern Conference. Why? Well, part of it is because the team is just not nearly as good as nova thinks it is. It’s an average defensive team, and that will always keep a squad from fulfilling its potential. I do expect their offensive output to rise a bit and their points allowed per game to come down slightly, thus giving them more wins and a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. He should be fine. But, nova is a perfect example of what happens when you rebuild poorly. He was sitting in the contract year with Aminu, Rudy Fernandez, Bayless, and picks. That isn’t enough to get a great team together, and now he’s got a mishmash of players that don’t blend well with each other and no future. Tanking isn’t as easy as some people think. Outlawz does it extremely well as did others, but this can happen as well. Nova’s going to eventually need to blow this thing up and re-start. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the contract year again 6 seasons from now. His team has very little upside both now and in the future.
Verdict: He stays.
Los Angeles Clippers
Galo is gone, as he should be. I like Galo a lot, but he’s done an awful job in BBS for a LONG time, and I think that this is the year that he finally gets kicked out. Even after Spence somehow handed him Chris Paul and Vince Carter (what the fuck?) he still cannot get this team on track, a fact that is reason enough for him to be fired. While the weak Eastern Conference helps nova, the Western Conference really hurts Galo. I count only 5 or so teams that Galo is definitively better than, and I honestly don’t have any faith in him to climb out of the hole he has put himself in. The Dunleavy thing was PATHETIC and literally made no sense at all. Why would someone want Dunleavy for 8 games, but not 70? Oh, because he got ripped by other GMs so he decided to back out on a technicality. Totally pathetic. I hate to sound “superior” but that’s not that kind of thing you’d like to see in BBS. Maybe in UOSL2 (LOL). The fact is, he just doesn’t deserve to be in the league anymore. He cannot field a competitive team now that the GM pool has been strengthened to such a high level.
Verdict: He’s gone.
So there you have it. Two will stay, one will go. I wouldn’t be shocked if they all made it, and I wouldn’t be shocked if two get fired. The only definite is that ducky will be fine. Not only does he have the best team of the bunch, he also has the best future.
