2009 BBS GMOY: The Discussion[/u]
It sometimes an arduous task to pin down one individual for the prestigious BBS GM of the Year. This year in particular, there were five GMs that stood out among the rest of the pack in making their teams’ championship caliber ball clubs. Although it is always possible one of the teams do not hoist the trophy in the Finals, they have put their teams in the best position to do so anyway. Without further ado, here are the best candidates for the 2008-2009 BBS campaign.
The Top Candidates:
Jordan, Milwaukee Bucks
Nanz, Los Angeles Lakers
Mark, New Jersey Nets
Ducky, Denver Nuggets
Dan, Portland Trail Blazers
GM: Jordan
Team: Milwaukee Bucks
The Resume: 62-20 record, finished 1st in Eastern Conference and Central Division
Honorary Marks: It seems like this year was the season it all clicked for Jordan’s Bucks. He made the big time acquisition of Yao Ming in the off-season, acquired a pivotal bench players in Michael Olowokandi and Gerald Wallace, moved Ike Diogu to a better defensive position and finally acquired a true point guard better than Jamaal Tinsley in Jannergo Pargo. All the while, he managed to keep Kobe Bryant, who was mentioned in many trade rumors this past off-season. The only knock on Jordan may be that he waited too long to acquire a point guard instead of waiting on Tinsley and trying Bryant at point guard. Could the Bucks been better already with a true point guard like Pargo two or three seasons ago?
GM: Nanz
Team: Los Angeles Lakers
The Resume: 59-23 record, finished 1st in Western Conference and Pacific Division
Honorary Marks: The Lakers received a real face lift when the season as the entire roster was almost revamped. With the exception of big men LaMarcus Aldridge and Josh Smith, Nanz got on the phones and picked up a new backcourt in Manu Ginobilli and Mike Bibby along with Shawn Marion from Chicago. The result? An almost unstoppable offensive attack along with superior defense, rebounding and very few turnovers. They also strengthened their bench by keeping sixth man Kevin Durant in the loop and bringing in veterans Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson. All of these things may spell championship in the end of the day for the Lakers.
GM: Mark
Team: New Jersey Nets
The Resume: 59-23 record, Finished 2nd in Eastern Conference. 1st in Atlantic Division
Honorary Marks: GM Mark has compiled perhaps the most balanced line-up in all of BBS. Although the Nets’ bench is not as strong as others, their starters make up enough for it. Not to mention, they hold one of the best young centers in the game in Greg Oden. Like the two other teams mentioned before, the Nets made a big acquisition in Paul Pierce to really bolster their chances in the post-season and bringing them closer to a championship win.
GM: Ducky
Team: Denver Nuggets
The Resume: 53-29 record, finished 2nd in the Western Conference. 1st in the Midwest Division.
Honorary Marks: In his Contract Year, Ducky really stepped up the plate. First, he started by getting Dirk Nowitzki from Phoenix, who ended up finishing second in scoring in the entire league. Next, he upgraded from Kevin Love to Jermaine O’Neal, who put up very good numbers alongside Dwight Howard. Later, the Nuggets dealt for Ben Gordon to get better at shooting guard. Finally, in order to get stronger down low, they went out and got Pau Gasol from Memphis. Equipped with this strong roster, the Nuggets look very formidable going into the playoffs and playing some tough teams along the way.
GM: Dan
Team: Portland Trail Blazers
The Resume: 51-31 record, finished 3rd in the Western Conference. 2nd in the Pacific Division.
Honorary Marks: Dan really made some noise this year as well by shaking up his roster and getting some marquee players. He started by getting a top three center in Nenad Kristic followed by getting his frontcourt mate, Darko Milicic from Utah. The Blazers then went out and got a scorer in Joe Johnson and handed the reigns of point guard to DJ Augustin, who never looked back. There are a number of nice role players on this team as well including Eddie House, Glen Davis and Josh Childress. The Blazers look very sound on paper and should have a healthy argument to have its GM be considered for this award.
The GMOY Discussion Winner: Nanz, Los Angeles Lakers
This is very tough choice, but this writer’s discussion topic winner for GMOY goes to Nanz of the Los Angeles Lakers. He made the biggest moves and led his team to the top of the West. Plus, the Western Conference was superior to the Eastern Conference this year by far, so the Lakers were faced against tough competition and still managed to get 57 wins and a 34-7 home mark. Mark of the NJ Nets and Jordan of the Milwaukee Bucks are all great selections as well and both are probably deserving as well but Nanz gets the nod this year.
Final GMOY Discussion Standings:
1- Nanz, LA Lakers
2- Jordan, Milwaukee Bucks
3- Mark, NJ Nets
4- Dan, Portland Trail Blazers
5- Ducky, Denver Nuggets
