Philadelphia, a Lock
Entering BBS2000 with more pressure to succeed than any other GM was Philadelphia’s WillC. Coming from the heralded NBN sim league and with it’s legacy set firm on his shoulders, Will proved his worth before the season had even began by trading for the leagues most dominant player, Shaqulle O’Neal, in the inaugural player draft. Since then, he has surrounded the Big Diesel with Brian Grant (15.2ppg, 9.5rpg, 1.0bpg), Glen Robinson (17.4ppg, 6.5rpg), Jalen Rose (13.1ppg, 5.9rpg, 3.6apg) and Terrell Brandon (15.5ppg, 7.8apg, 4.0rpg, 2.0spg) whilst at the same time, adding veteran talent to the teams already deep bench and tactically guiding his Sixers to a league best 44-12 record. Statistically, Philly are currently the best scoring team in the league, the leagues 3rd best rebounding team, the leagues best passing team, the leagues 3rd best ‘stealing’ team and the leagues 2nd best team at limiting turnovers. With a select group of talented stars, I see them as a lock for BBS2000’s first ever championship.
Chris Webber, Cleveland’s King
After falling 24 places in BBS2000’s player dispersal draft, Chris Webber entered the 2000 season ready to prove those that passed up on him wrong. Not only is he averaging a stellar and league-recognised 25.4ppg, 11.6rpg, 4.4apg, 1.3spg and 1.6bpg, he is also carrying his Cleveland Cavaliers to a 42-17 record, which is only second to Philadelphia in the East. Thanks to Webber, Cleveland rank amongst the leagues best scorers (4th) and rebounders (2nd). Better than expected contributions from 25-year old Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Larry Johnson, Jimmy Jackson, the injured Nick Van Exel and newly acquired Croatian Sensation Toni Kukoc, have also contributed to Cleveland’s winning ways thus far.
Washington: An Eccentric Combination that Works
The Wizards minute-getting roster consists of the following players: Kevin Garnett (big man, 23 years of age, 26 and 9), Arvydas Sabonis (big man, 35 years of age, Lithuanian, 17 and 9), Horace Grand (big man, 35 years of age, wears goggles, 11 and 8), Karl Malone (big man, 37 years of age, 22 and 8), Walt Williams (30), John Starks (35) and Breven Knight (24). Their back-court of Starks and Knight is one of the worst in the league, however their trio of Garnett, Malone and Sabonis down low with Grant off the bench has proved to be one of the best in the league amidst scepticism at the start of the year. Although the amalgamation of players that is the Washington Wizards is both statistically and physically weird, they are winning games and that’s all that matters. If I were them, I'd ship some firsts and Horace Grant for a respectable 2 man.
Boston Slowing Down
After starting the year in red-hot form, the 35-22 Celtics are running cold at the moment (4-6 in their last 10). After starting the season atop of the Eastern Conference, which included a 100% winning first sim, Kobe Bryant and co have seemingly cooled off. The aforementioned Bryant, along with Juwan Howard, Mookie Blaylock, Peja Stojakovic and Cliff and David Robinson are all incredibly talented yet are finding it difficult to notch up wins when it counts; at the end of the season. In saying that, they are still 35-22 which is good enough for home court advantage during the first round of the playoffs.
An Even Spread in Detroit
At 37-24, many would say that Detroit is progressing just fine; and they are. However, after trading almost every first round pick they own until 2005, you would expect the Pistons to at least be a top 3 team in the East. Just like the real life Detroit, BBS2000’s version feature a very nice spread of scoring which includes over 15ppg however under 20ppg from Rasheed Wallace, Latrell Sprewell, Eddie Jones and Michael Finley. Big Theo Ratliff is contributing well as expected however the limited production from young Chauncey Billups (7.0ppg, 3.7apg) has hurt Detroits evolution thus far. Nevertheless, they are well over .500 and with the development of Billups, the Pistons should be a threat every year until the end of the sim.
What Could Have Been in Toronto
After landing a pick good enough to draft Shaquille O’Neal, the Toronto Raptors are now staring another lottery season in the face on the back of Tracy McGrady’s stellar production; however not much else. Raef LaFrentz is putting up just over 16ppg (shooting 40% from the field), and the next leading scorer on the team is Robert Pack who is averaging 6.8ppg in only 18 minutes. Already, Dallas GM Krubinski has pointed the tanking stick at DJ and his Raptors believing that they are not fielding the best possible team and aiming to lose to ensure a top pick for the franchise. On an-going feud between the two has carried over from the old BBS and is showing no signs of extinction.
New York, Indiana, Miami: You Suck
Many GM’s have called for intentionally losing to be Outlawzed in the new BBS, however that has not swayed the plans of three GM’s; New Yorks, Indiana’s and Miami’s. Indiana suck, however they at least have Larry Hughes and Marcus “I’m more efficient than you” Taylor. Miami are terrible, however they at least have Michael Redd. New York on the other hand, just plain suck. At the end of the season they will not have a single contracted player. Their best inside scorer has a C+ rating. Their best defender has a B rating and their best rebounder has a C+ rating. If we want to compare how shit their starting power forward is (Sam Perkins clocks in the most minutes), we must evaluate how many shots he blocks per game: 0.3, and compare that to how many team mate Muggsy Bogues (5’3”) blocks per game: 0.4. Yes, repulsive. The Knicks, Pacers and Heat share the bottom 3 offensive positions in the league (PPG) and they are in the bottom echelon of the leagues rebounding, passing, stealing and blocking categories. They all suck.
