1. What are the plans for your team in this coming year. Basically no one gives a shit about this question but I put it in here because I need boring material before the juicy shit.
We compete! I think that was like the swim team or track team's motto in high school, so great. Just added Mash, been shopping the hell out of everyone, but I expect to win 44 games this season and make the playoffs. Look for a big TC out of Redd, and Boykins is just unreal. He was the most efficient player I've had play for me last season. Mash can do 20 every night and has real good D, which we lacked at the 3 last year with Fizer and Miles in. He adds a lot of punch to the lineup. I say we bring in Mihm and look to win to make some of those contract year teams work harder for it.
2. FA looks to be extremely competitive this year. What are your views on this FA process and more importantly the fact that over half the league is loaded with cap space. If teams are making trades to free up cap space or banking on their team being competitive based on FA are they in for a rude awakening?
I don't think many team are making deals solely to gain cap space. I'd say it's an added bonus to the typical kind of offseason deals that entail vet talents with bigger contracts going for youth plus picks. The contract year teams all look like they need to round out their lineups/add stars, but I'll tell you what, it's not out there. Rip's a prize, sure, and I wonder if Phoenix will look to retain him after their puzzling offseason moves (more on this later). Odom will get money, but I know he won't ever be much better than he is now. That said, he could be a real effective role player at the 3 or as a backup. I don't think FA is where teams are made ever. Good teams improve, bad teams can add talent, but you never come out of FA having done a 180. It's not the place, especially so early on in the league. Next season's FA will be great, though.
3. We always ask who is the worst GM's in the league. We always get Martinez and some other bimbo's so I won't ask that. However, who do you think has done the worst managerial job over a short-term period and why? Who has done the best managerial job over the short term as well?
I don't worry as much about managerial jobs if guys are good for the league. Two things I hate are inactivity and tanking. But as far as managerial jobs go, I want to criticize a different kind of job: complacency. Nobody can attack Martinez for making moves to improve his team and get to 40 wins, especially when he has a nice young core. I'd rather attack Vernon. He's got a great team on his hands and he doesn't care. He doesn't care. They could win 45 and be a piece away from 55, and he wouldn't do shit. It's pathetic.
But it's not just him. We have Galo, who is impossible to trade with and has a mediocre core that underperforms. We see him post he's frustrated, but heaven forbid he went out and made a move to improve that roster. He has never been active enough to make a splash through trades. Last BBS, he hung around because he won early. But he did an overall really poor job and never did much to get his team out of the cellar.
I think Skillz has sucked it up, but he had a good offseason. He needs to stay active though. That's huge. His team could be really good this year with a good TC out of Melo/AK. I'd like to see him pick it up.
I think Blue should feel the need to build something good around here, and it's clear that he basically did all he could to avoid contract year status and then went right back to rebuilding. This is his first stint in BBS, so that's pretty unacceptable. He's a good GM, but I really think it's the wrong decision to rebuild like that without your pick, especially after you've lost 3 of 4 seasons already. I'd like him to win sooner rather than later.
I'm not immune to criticism. I've done a completely shit job, no doubt in my mind. Signing Boykins was huge, but the VC trade sucks. I thought VC would have nothing left in the tank; I was wrong. I believe in Redd still, and I've got a lot of trade bait, but really, I've done just enough to stay afloat as an 8th seed or so in the East, and I need to build something better than just solid. A lot will change during this season. I want to catch some teams desperate and shake up my team a lot. We'll see.
Lastly, the contract year teams have obviously been poor managerially. Outlawz does his thing, and it works, so I won't comment other than to say that I think it's a method that any other GM could do but chooses not to because it's cheap. Nova has undervalued his firsts, and that deal DJ crippled his offseason prospects. Loved the Big Ben deal though.
Who cares who's doing the best job? Ebener won it all with impressive deals, though he'll regret moving Pau. Uh, other than that, everyone's on the same plane as far as performance. Andy built a solid team, but resigning Camby was a really bad decision, and it took him some time to compete. Mark's got an awesome team, but he's had a lot of luck, so he is pathetic. That's it. Big fan of Pig's team, he's definitely an elite GM at this point.
4. We have 3 teams coming up in the contract year. Who goes and why? Who needs to make some moves to solidify there spot in this league and who looks like a contender?
If the season started today, Indiana and New Orleans are definitely gone. Two teams with zero depth and subpar talent. Both teams better get trading and making so major upgrades to improve. If I'm Nova, I shop Yao immediately, wait and see how I'm doing at Day 25 of the season, and if I'm not on pace to win 40, I move Yao for the best package of talent. He flat out needs more players, more talents. With West on board, I think he should shop Ben Wallace for a really proven player.
Tiger, I don't know what to say. He needs a big TC, a good PG at 13, and a lot of luck in TC. He isn't close right now.
Outlawz, with Marbs/Wade/Chandler, will make it.
5. Do GM's who have shown success with their records but lack activity need to be fired? Does winning but never being around help or hinder BBS as a whole?
No, Hernando doesn't need to be fired. But he's a dick and should pick it up. Vernon does, definitely. No place for him here. Look at how much guys post, how on top of things basically every single BBS GM is, and then there's Vernon, who never posts and doesn't make moves. He's dead weight. If he had a 35 win team, no doubt he's gone. Galo's a guy who's proven himself I guess but definitely is a bottom five GM, all things considered. Spence tends to weed out guys without too much urgency--not a complaint, but a fact. We'll see. I think Play needs to post more, too.
6. Which GM's talk too much on the boards. Who thinks that they are better then they are? Who is the most knowledgeable GM when it comes to FBB.
Most guys would answer name me for at least one of those, haha. I don't know, I probably attacked enough guys throughout this interview, and besides, I don't there's too much of this going on. I know that if I say anything about Dave, it will come to dominate this thread, and I think there's a ton of good discussion about BBS in this article, so I'll refrain and ask that he keeps any personal things away from this thread.
I don't if many guys are overrated around here. We have really good GMs.
As far as BBS knowledge, I'd have to think DJ has some knowledge with depth charts, because when he wants to lose, he does a great job assembling a DC that doesn't match his lineup. Reilly never has losing teams, so he knows the recipe, obviously. Krup obsesses over depth charts, so I'm sure he's got an edge there. There isn't that much discussion of strategy anymore, so it's a tough question to answer.
7. 100 Dollar Freeroll tonight. Vegas odds have Pig as the front runner but Mark is getting cocky after 2 final tables in a row. Who takes it.
I'm sitting 165th out of 1463 with 5,100+ chips. You want to snub me? Fuck you. See you at the final table.
