There was a lot of moves made this past offseason. Maybe the most busy offeason so far. Let's take a look at some of the winners and losers
1. Biggest winner of the offseason has to go to the New Jersey Nets. Landed one of the best players in the league in Kobe Bryant which enable the Nets to create cap room and use their almost satanic luck with free agency to land probably the most sought after free agent in Richard Hamilton. But he's not done there folks. In a league scarce with good big men he flips Hamilton for Webber a top 15 player last year regardless of age. When you pick up 2 top 15 guys in the offseason it's easy to give Mark the # 1 nod.
2. The Mavs get this next slot. Whenever you land an 18 year old with the potential to be the best player in the league, luck or not, you call that a great offseason. Remains to be seen what the Mavs will do but a lebron/amare combo will be dangerous for years to come.
3. This slot IMO is a tie between the 3 teams going into their contract year. In no particular order
Pacers - Although they made questionable moves they completed their objective in becoming a better team equipped to fight for the playoffs. Picked up one of the best bigs in Ben Wallace for Jason Richardson who at the moment could be deemed the biggest bust in BBS considering he was chosen # 2 overall. They overpaid but got a dynamic scorer in Jerry Stackhouse. Also, were able to draft 2 young guys in Barbosa and West. If the Pacers can pick up a pg they should be a lock.
Hornets - Things were looking pretty bleak for my boy tiger for second there. Took a big risk by moving his lotto pick which he turned into a bunch of 1st's. He pried one of the best players in the league from the Kings for a few picks, got All League 3rd team PG in Boykins and sharpshooter Michaell Redd for Rashard Lewis and Jennings. In retrospect i give the deal a slight edge for the Hornets since Jennings had a bad TC and it gave him a more complete team. Marion looks sick and after a grim outlook the Hornets should be competing for a spot in the playoffs
Knicks - Drafted Kaman and landed stud pg Stephon Marbury who absolutely exploded in TC. Was also able to pick Monster Mash to help out Wade and Marbs on the outside. Drafted Maurice Williams who is looking like a steal and sharpshooters Kyle Korver and Jason Kapono for their fast outside tempo that they'll be running. Knicks lack depth down low but should easily be in the playoffs.
1. I think the biggest loser of the offseason had to be the Bucks. They took a chance by moving Wallace straight up for J-Rich and he ended up not doing anything in TC. Lost Francis to the Nuggets in free agency. They still have Pierce who had a marvelous tc but with the Mavs holding onto that Bucks 04 1st it looks like the Bucks might struggle to even make the playoffs this season. Not entirely the GM's fault. He took some risks and they just didnt work out.
2. I think the Suns come in 2nd. They had a core of Webber, Marbury, and Rip. Webber they dealt for a good amount of picks so can't really knock em for that deal. They then dealt Marbs for Kaman. Kaman did nothing in TC while Marbury exploded. They also unfortunately lost Rip to the Nets in free agency. The suns do not have their pick so it'll be interesting to see what kinda of moves are made in Phoenix.
3. This spot goes to the Portland Trailblazers. Although, they were an old team if i was Basone i would have held on to my guys and just stretched it out instead of letting guys have good draft picks. Im not sure whens the next time the Blazers have their first but the present nor the future looks bright in Portland. They dealt Kidd for prospects who are still pretty raw. Mutombo was given away for a 1st and he still did not retire. Mash was dealt to the Magic and now they dont have much of a team or their own picks. Definitely not a good time to tear it up.
