In the recent BBS offseason, there were many big trades that turned heads around the league.
Some were well-received, while others were placed under the microscope of critical minds who picked apart every detail in a crushing fashion.
Here are the deals (with post-TC ratings) and each team's respective grade:
Knicks get:
Stephon Marbury PG 26 6'2'' 180 B- A- A A- C- B
Suns get:
Chris Kaman C 21 7'0'' 255 B C C- B B- C
Milos Vujanic PG 6'3'' 178 22 C+ C+ C+ C+ D+ C (has since been cut)
Pistons 2004 1st
Knicks 2004 1st
Knicks grade: A+
Marbury has a bad rep among NBA fans, but the BBS is a different animal. Adding a player with Starbury's skill set to Dwyane Wade and future stud Tyson Chandler is a fantastic decision. Trading Kaman was a risk that looks to have paid off.
Suns grade: C-
The Suns are rebuilding, but had they waited until after TC, Marbury's value would have skyrocketed at the coveted PG position. The first round picks look to both be in the 20s and Kaman went up in only one category.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Nets trade:
Rip Hamilton SG 25 6'7'' 196 B- A C+ B C- B
GSW 04 First
GSW 05 First
Hawks trade:
Chris Webber PF 30 6'10'' 245 A- C C+ B B D
Nets grade: B
The Nets wanted someone in the frontcourt with Kobe rather than in the backcourt. I personally feel that hanging onto Rip would have been a better strategy given the similar ages, but Webber likely makes the Nets more of a contender. Giving up the two 1sts doesn't make a huge difference since they won't be very good.
Hawks grade: A-
I understand this deal for them. They have a younger team, which should have no problem acclimating Rip and Webber was expendable since he just turned 30.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies trade:
Ron Artest SF 23 6'8'' 252 B- B C+ A C B
Pistons trade:
Chauncey Billups PG 27 6'3'' 204 C B+ A- B+ C B
Grizzlies grade: A-
Billups is a few years older than Artest, but the importance of the point guard position cannot be understated. The one aspect that I don't understand is what direction the team is going in with this acquisition. Do they trade Butler for a more veteran star or do they tow the line and see what this mixed bag of players can do?
Pistons grade: B+
Like I said about the Grizzlies, I don't understand the direction that this deal implies, but the Pistons are certainly getting a nice player. However, I'd take Billups over Artest personally.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hawks Trade:
Andrei Kirilenko SF 22 6'9'' 210 B- C D+ A C+ B
Danny Ferry who cares
Pistons Trade:
Rasheed Wallace PF 29 6'11'' 236 B C+ C B+ C+ B
Hawks grade: B
The Hawks get the better player in the trade, but I think that they likely could have gotten a better young player instead of someone who is 29.
Pistons grade: B+
It looks like the Pistons want to acquire younger players and they do just that in this deal. Kirilenko should still have some room for growth.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Clippers Send:
Steve Nash PG 29 6'3'' 195 C+ A A B D+ C
Marvericks Send:
Jared Jeffries SF 21 6'10'' 215 C+ C+ C B C C
Jay Williams PG 22 6'2'' 195 C+ C+ B- C+ C C
Speedy Claxton PG 25 5'11'' 186 C+ C+ B C+ D C
Wiz '04, Clipps '05, Bucks '09 First Round PIcks
Mavericks grade: A+
This is just an outright steal. Spare parts for a premier point guard.
Clippers grade: D-
They get a lot of pieces, but none of them are superstars and unless they get lucky in the draft, this trade will be a huge mistake when we look back. The only reason they don't get an "F" is because time will tell what those picks amount to.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hindsight is 20/20, but for the time being, that is my trade report card and more will be sure to come in the future.
