March 16th was a day of trading the likes of which BBS2000 likely has'nt seen.
Many big names switchng teams then less than 24 hours or even 24 minutes in
some cases moving to other teams again. Lets try and take a look at them from hopefully an objective and accurate position.
1.Jazz-Rockets
Jazz send
06 2nd and 2 FA's
to Rockets for
C-Steven Hunter.
Comments- Eh, lets move on shall we. Backup for a 2nd,nuff said.
2.Houston-Portland deal
Houston sends
PF-Murphy
PF-Collins
Blazers 05
to Portland for
SF-Prince
Spurs 04
2 vet FA's
Comments- Houston sends solid young PF in Murphy who will probably be a real nice backup on a good team along with a project in Collins and the Blazers 05 which may have had the potential to be lotto but with the FA of gold looming and the salary cap room Portland had I was'nt gonna bet on it.
In return Rockets get real nice young shutdown D type player at SF/SG in Prince and the Spurs 04 which I think as stands now has a chance to be decent. More on that later. I'd grade this deal as even.
3.Seattle-San Antonio, this is where the big deals start
Sonics trade:
Lamar Odom
Boris Diaw
Carlos Delfino
Spurs trade:
Antawn Jamison
Mickael Pietrus
Comments-Odom is a nice balanced player not quite on the superstar level but very good. Diaw looks to have nice upside and Delfino right now who knows. In return Seattle gets a better scorer in Jamison who is not quite as good a reb, defender but also doesnt turn the ball over as much either.
Pietrus looks to be a great potential defender but offensively not sure he'll ever score enough to be a starter. I give the edge here to Seattle mainly because I like Jamison better than Odom at SF. If these guys switch positions that may change but at SF you want a pure scorer I think and Jamison is that moreso than Odom.
4.Atlanta-San Antonio deal,another biggie
Spurs Trade:
Dwayne Wade
Matt Harpring
Laphonso Ellis
Mavs 2006 1st
Bucks 2007 1st
Knicks 2008 1st
Hawks Trade:
Carmelo Anthony
Richard Hamilton
Comments-Wow, this one is a doosy. Spurs move a great young player in Wade who should get much better with 2 pretty much bench guys and 3 picks for 2 real nice looking young players in Rip and Melo. For now the edge goes to SA but when all is said and done Atlanta will probably end up benefitting more from this deal. Melo and Rip are 2 very good players but
when you get a chance for a potential great one I think you have to keep the great one. The Mavs 06 and Knicks 08 probably wont be much value wise but the Bucks 07 has a chance to be decent since Bucks are in 1st year of all out rebuild mode.
5.Seattle-San Antonio round 2
Sonics trade:
Pau Gasol
Jeff Foster
Wally Szczerbiak
Spurs trade:
Rip Hamilton
Andrew Declerq
Comments- This is basically Spurs trying to replace TD in a huge deal with the Knicks 3 days prior. They receive young prospect C-Gasol, and 2 bench players in Foster and Szcerbiak for Rip Hamilton who was aquired in the Hawks deal and PF-Declerq who is a journeyman. This one I rate tentatively even. Gasol while not developing as fast as many anticipated still has a shot to be very good. They also get 2 good bench guys in Foster who does the dirty work and Wally who comes off the bench firing and is good at it. Sonics get a very nice young SG in Rip who is showing signs of becoming possibly an elite scoring SG. Rip is a better player than Pau right now but Pau is 2 yrs younger and probably still developing. Main reason I rate this even is big men are just tougher to get than SG's even though Rip is looking like the better player at this time. After all
these trades by the Spurs post TD I think they actually take a step back. Wade was already a very good all around player but taking his spot is an avg at best def SF in Melo who cant score like Wade, and no great defensive center to bail him out. Gasol looks to me like a good position defensive player but is
not going to compenate for his teamates weaknesses like a Diop,Wallace or Ratliff. And while Odom and Bibby are good but not great defenders the rest of the roster is avg at best which I think may cause the Spurs some problems against good scoring teams. I think the Spurs may struggle after all is said and done.
6.Orlando-Phoenix deal
Suns get:
Rashard Lewis
Magic get:
Calderon
Nesterovic
Detroit 04 1st
Hawks 06 1st
Jazz 07 1st
Comments- Magic send a very good young SF in Shard Lewis to the Suns for a combo of picks, young PG Calderon who looks solid at this point and an avg big in Nesterovic. This deal comes down to where those picks land. Pistons 04 and Hawks 06 I dont see being much value. Jazz 07 however with an aging
team could be nice. Shard is right now a big time SF who may get better though, so in order to come out ahead on this deal one of those picks must end up top3 in a good draft class. I dont like odds like that so the edge here goes to the Suns PROVIDING they resign Shard. It's a gamble both ways but I
think the Suns come out ahead here at this point.
7.Milwaulkee-Sacremento deal
Bucks trade
SAR
Kings Trade
Ostertag
2005 Pacers 1st
Comments- Certainly not a big deal but smart deal for both teams. Bucks get a 1st for SAR who is a good scorer and Kings improve their team. Good deal for both but since that pick is looking like an essence a 2nd like the Kings end better.
8.Atlanta-Sacremento deal
Hawks Trade:
Matt Harpring
Lee Nailon
NYK 08 1st
ATL 09 1st
ATL '10 1st
Kings Trade:
Grant Hill
Comments- Kings get a nice pkg here for Hill who is still a very good player, but those picks are so far ahead in time there's a chance they are solid picks.Harpring is a nice vet bench guy also. Have to give the edge here to the Kings since I really dont see Atlanta's objective in doing this and those picks may
turn out pretty good who knows. Although it is nice to see the Hawks making a run even though they have their pick and could've tanked. I respect that. He wants to win which is the idea after all. He does have lots of salary tied up in his players though and can resign Hill now possibly since he wont be an
active FA bidder next year for the big boys so it does make sense looking closer at it from his side. Still, edge to Kings for now.
9.Miwaulkee-Sacremento deal take two
Kings trade:
SAC 08 1st and Matt Harpring
Bucks trade:
Dermarr Johnson and Predrag Drobnjak
Comments- Dont know what the Kings are thinking here. Drobnjak is a journeyman and Demarr is a very overpaid prospect who I'm not sure will ever get much better. I like Harpring more than Johnson really and then a 1st moves in deal to Bucks also? Just dont get it. Bucks are a big winner here.
This is one man's view. How it play's out time will be the final judge but hey, thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the bigeest trade day in BBS2000 history.
