Let's start with the creme of the crop with our top seven at the top shall we?
James Jiles SR. PG Gonzaga 5'11 208 LBs
Could Jiles be the highest picked player under six feet ever in BBS history? Time will tell. For now, Jiles is one of the best in country. He combines one of prettiest shots from the behind the 3 point line with great vision on the court which makes him nearly unstoppable.
Besides his frame, Jiles only other weakness may be his defense which could leave some things to be desired. However his offense makes more than up for it and should make him a mid-to-late lotto pick for some team.
Jiles' 2013 Resume
1st Team All-American
1st Team West Coast Conference
West Coast Conference Player of the Year
David Henson SR. Utah 6'4 233 LBs
Henson led the nation in scoring last year with a shade under 26 points a game. He's simply one of the best shooters in the country at this point while shooting a 46% clip from the field. Somehow he was snubbed for Conference player of the year by Gary Flora of New Mexico.
Still, Henson figures to be a strong first round selection depending on his development in his final season. He's a lock to be an extrodinary shooter on the next level with an already strong frame that helps him defend bigger players.
Henson's 2013 Resume:
1st Team All Mountain West Conference
18 Player of the Game Selections
Marcos McCormick JR. SG UCLA 6'4 210 LBs
One of the catalysts of the Bruins' championship run was McCormick simply because his game is hard to stop. The junior from Long Beach put up very nice numbers as a sophomore (17.7 ppg, 4.1 apg, 2.0 spg) playing only 28 minutes per game.
Now as an upperclassman, McCormick has the chance to carry UCLA to another title game and improve his draft stock even more. Looking more and more like combo guard, McCormick incorporates a strong inside game with a solid outside, great handling skills and superior defense. If he declares, McCormick has an excellent chance to go in the lottery depending on the decisions of other top players.
McCormick's 2013 Resume
Pac-10 Player of the Year
1st Team All-Pac 10 Team
Billie Suiter SR. SG Utah St. 6'5 225 LBs
The only other All-American on this list is suitably Suiter, who put up nice numbers for Utah St. this season. Along with his 20 points per game, Suiter averaged over 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per contest. The Los Angeles native also was the Big West Conference Player of the Year as well as first team selection.
Suiter has outstanding stamina and jumping ability which helped him play more than 31 minutes a game last year. He is also a very deadly from the arc as he hit 41% of his 3-Point attempts last season. Look for Suiter to be even better in his last season at UTST and potentially be early to mid late first round selection.
Suiter's 2013 Resume:
All-American 2nd Team selection
Big West Player of the Year
Big West Conference First Team Selection
Ronald Harty FR. SF Pepperdine 6'6 230 LBs
The only other representing the west schools on the All-American Team other than Suiter and Jiles was Harty on the All-Freshman team. Hailing from Alabama, Harty played productive minutes for the Waves this past season. Although his ratings are not pretty at the moment, Harty has tons of potential to grow.
Harty looks to be in mold of Jamario Moon or another undersized small forward that plays solid defense and gets lots of rebounds. Harty may not be a first round selection if he declares because he is so raw but if he does he may go in the second round. His best bet might be to stay in school and improve his stock more.
Harty's 2013 resume:
Freshman All-American
West Coast Conference 2nd Team
West Coast Conference Freshman All-Conference
West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year
Peter Smith JR. PG California 5'9 194 LBs
Smith finished ninth in the nation in assists per game last season (6.2) and did it all as a junior. Although undersized, Smith has great stamina and speed which often drives opponents crazy. He also has a very good shot as he averaged nearly 16 a game for the Golden Bears.
Most scouts are worried about Smith's size on the next level. However, common knowledge points to the success other undersized BBS point guards (Earl Boykins, Byron Eaton, etc) to see that he could be effective. Look for Smith to stay another year and be a solid pick-up for a team in two years.
Smith's 2013 Resume
Player of the game: 10
1st Team All-Pac 10
Tony Carrol FR. PG Wyoming 6'1 201 LBs
Probably the second most intriguing freshman on this list after Harty is Carrol. This guy emerged out of nowhere to average nearly 12 points a game and 4 dimes a night. However his biggest knock has been turnovers which hovered near 4 a game as well.
Yet, Carrol's passing game will get better with time and he should be able to develop by combining his strong outside game and quickness into becoming a solid starter on a BBS team. Look for Carrol to possibly be in the mix for a first round selection in 1-2 more seasons.
