Now let me start us off by saying that I understand the Eastern Conference has a good foot and leg on the Western Conference as far as talent concerned. It is tenfold tougher to get to the playoffs in that conference then in the West. However, I think the amount of hype that GM's have given the conference is kind of ridiculous. Maybe I am not seeing eye to eye with the Eastern Conference GM's so I am here trying to clarify dilemmas. I am not sure whether Eastern Conference GM's think that they would be more successful out in the West, if they were there to begin with or they are just upset with the situation that they are in. One could make the argument that the West has had some hefty managerial blows over the course of this BBS, however the East can make the same argument. When you weigh Hernando, Dave, A2J and Andy against Tiger, James, Reilly, Keelty the West losses definitely hit hard (especially when answering the GM's gripes about unbalance between the conference talent Spence had put a lot of faith in 3 of the 4 forementioned above.) Reading past statements over the course of the last couple of weeks people have blamed a wide array of things on why East GM's were more successful then those in the West. One of the things I agreed with was lack of activity. There is no doubt about it that the East is a more compacted social group then the West. There are only 3 GM's (Jah, DJ, Don) that don't have a defining voice in league affairs while in the West you have spontaneous activity, guys who would rather be backstage, guys showing up erroneously. Dan and Fernando always show up to play and so does Martinez even though it might not be appreciated at times. Andrew and Blue are around but like to stay in the shadows. Ducky is in 40 leagues. I am to busy dipping and playing poker. AllStar is playing the new video game. Scott is doing Scott-stuff. Aar is doing his own thing sometimes. Greg as well. Memphis guy is new but he seems like a looser cannon then me. Galo is picking it up. Overall, the organization of the Western Conference can easily be a factor in the imbalance of success.
However while the "cause" which was conference organization was addressed its proceeding "effect" was not. Novocaine and Gentleman, the Eastern Conference has been a more successful conference because of the growth of it's GM's, the effect of when you have a tightly knitted group of individuals. Ebener has grown stronger as a GM, Jordan definitely has grown stronger, Skillz still blows up his teams but he has built stronger ones, Jay has gotten a lot better and Outlawz is still a bitch whose ass I am going to kick Sunday night in East Tremont.
For those of you who still think that what I am saying is completely irrelevant lets go look at the West Coast. The two most successful GM's out there are Dan and Fernando who talk about BBS with the New Canaan Crew every day. Plans are discussed, strategies exchange, experimenting takes place, trains are ran on random chicks whose name they will forget the next day. In the Eastern Conference due to the activity that takes place more attention is paid to things around them. People learn and grow from the interactions that fellow GM's make, it makes it easier to construct a game plan and learn more about the FBB process.
My own experience is a prime example of this organization. At my BBS peak I was a student of the game. Going through sim threads listening to what other people said and did in order to make my own game plans stronger. It worked and it showed. It also shows when I take a lax approach to league matters. Maybe it was arrogance but pardon to common belief I am incredibly humble. The things I did to become successful I threw out the window. I have had two 59 win teams, one 62 win team, lost two Game 7's in the finals but I never felt content with any of the structures of my teams. Had I listened more to the other GM's in this league, went over stats, gameplan, gametape (joke) and in general kept my eyes open I potentially of had two championships in this league so far.
It had been mentioned by Skillz the other day to move several Eastern Conference GM's over to the West in order to balance out BBS. In my opinion that is not the answer to the problem. We need dormant GM's to wake up, myself include to wake up and get more active. Every GM in this league has been around the block enough times to know what the fuck is a good trade and what is a bad trade. Everyone has been doing this long enough where they are damn capable of being the best GM in this league. There have been enough superior GM's to study, years of studying your own abilities, the little things that make good GM's great ones.
We can make the simple fix and move several strong GM's to the West to make some visible changes in the standings, or GM's in the West can get up off there asses and work to reach their maximum potential so we can see a visible change in BBS.
