I understand if the Yanks don't want to add Manny, obviously. They're staying out of the Tex thing because it's what they planned, and they spent all their money on pitching--fine. But I don't get why they're making Pettitte the only other guy they're working on signing. It's bizarre. So were penciling in Swish for essentially all the ABs at 1b despite the fact that he had one of the worst offensive seasons of anyone in baseball last year? It really pisses me off. The guy hit .219! Struck out 135 times! They should be after a guy like Burrell or Dunn, no doubt. First, because Nady isn't a lock to be a big bat at all. Second, because Damon gets hurt. Third, there's gonna be a ton of at bats at DH this season; Matsui doesn't stay healthy and Posada is going to be catching almost immediately. So you have Damon-Gardner-Nady in the OF with Swish at first? Say Nady returns to form. That's likely. He was amazing for a month with the Yanks and finished at .268 for them. Say Swish gives you .240 with his good, but not great power. You're not gonna want to sit him when he's slumping? Say Damon gets hurt, or Gardner hits .250 for the year. Then you're banking so much on Posada being 2007 Posada, along with a huge year for Cano, that the offense is really up in the air. I think this team has a ton of ABs to go around, factoring in slumps and injuries, that I'd love to see them bring back Giambi, or at least look at another hitter.
