2016 BBS Draft Prospect
Ulysses Limon
University of Texas
SF/PF
6'8'' 220llbs
age: 21
Projected BBS ratings
B- C- C- A B B
The city of San Antonio has produced it's fair share of BBS superstars (Shaq Oneal, Deron WIlliams, etc) but the Texas city is more known from producing great defensive role players. Players like Eduardo Najera, Bo Outlaw, Devin Brown, and Jeff Foster all learned to specilize in defense on the city's ever growing street ball scene. Ulysses Limon is the next defensive stud to come from the area.
Though Limon was a starter on the 2012 North Rockland Highschool team that won the Texas state basketball championship he did not receive a schlorship offer for basketball. On that team he was over shadowed by fellow UT forward Jamessco Holmes. In fact although while in highschool Limon was all district in basketball and football it was track and field that finally earned him a full ride. He was named All State in high jump, long jump, and was the anchor 4x 400 meter team that took the state championship.
After highschool Ulysses attended The University of Texas. As a freshman Limon garnered national attention when he placed 2nd in high jump, 1st in long jump, and took 3rd in the 100 meter dash in the NCAA National Championships. Afterward he was named NCAA Track and Field Freshman of the Year. The future looked bright for the young latino in the track world.
But in his sophmore year it was a pick up game of basketball in the campus gym that thrust Limon back into the sport he loves. The UT track team was rained out of practice so track coach Spagetz Pomfrittz decided to let his kids play ball. Big mistake. Ulysses was dominating the other track althletes blocking shot after shot and showing off his high flying dunking ability. UT basketball coach Rick Barnes was walking through on his way to a meeting with the AD and took notice of Limon's wonderful leaping ability.
"I was just strolling on by and I noticed a pickup game" said Barnes " And I noticed this long a lanky kid just blocking shot after shot. I thought i was watching Marcus Camby or Ben Wallace or something. He was jumping out of the gym. I stopped and watched as he dominated these kids. He threw down a few pretty impressive dunks as well."
Barnes immidiately stopped the game to talk to Limon about joining the basketball team. All Limon could do was smile as he agreed to leave the track team and join up with Barnes.
"When he told me his name I was stunned" said Barnes "You're the Limon kid that has all the track coaches creaming their jeans? I asked him. I knew ol' Pomfrittz was gonna be pissed I was stealing his star but i couldnt help myself"
Ulysses' stellar speed and leaping ability made him a excellent role player off the bench and a fan favorite. His tenacious defense earned him alot of respect around the NCAA. But it wasnt until his senior year when his former highschool team mate Holmes went down the a torn ACL that UT fans learned what Limon could do with full time minutes.
Limon stepped right in a began showing people he was possibly the best defender in all of college basketball. He avg 4.5 blocks and 11 rebounds and 2 stls per game from the small foward and power forward positions. His outstanding defensive play helped lead the Longhorns to a Final Four appearance and earned him NCAA Defensive Player of the Year.
Now Limon is ready to take his nasty defensive game, leaping ability and speed to the BBS. Last year BBS scouts didnt even know who Limon was let alone know that he'd end up a late lotto to mid round pick in this year's draft. But after his NCAA tournement showing his draft status shot up faster than Plaxico Burress in a nightclub.
So how does Limon's game translate to the pros? Pretty well according to scouts.
"Limon could be the next AK47 if he plays his cards right." said New York scout Don Jubeen "He's quick, he's an outstanding leaper and shot blocker. He's got everything you want in a lock shutdown defender"
The only weakness in his game is offense. While he posesses great dunking ability he can not shoot very well and lacks the ball handling skill that could make him a great slasher.
"Offensive game is what Limon is lacking." New Orleans Hornets scout Rick Rondo said. "He'll be great at alley oops and open court dunks but he's kinda clumsy with the ball in his hands."
"His offense is kind of like Tyson Chandler's" Rondo added. "He'll dominate on put backs.... and his alley oops will be on sport center every night but he can shoot for shit."
Another flaw Limon has shown is what could also make him a great defender. He's a mean son of a bitch.
"He's definately got a mean streak about him" said Rick Barnes. "He's kinda hard to get along with at times. He yells through out the game... we had to keep him out of fights all the time. Fights with opponents, fights with teammates. But i think that meanness, that toughness is the gas that gets his motor going"
Regardless of these weaknesses many scouts are in love with Limon's game and love his ability not only to make an immidiate impact but to improve
"The sky is the limit for this kid." Rondo said. "Right now he's Ak47 but he could end up being an all timer like Dennis Romdan or Bill Lambier. I just wish we had a first to draft him..... stupid Captain Fantasy!"
