Jared McGahee
6'4" 220 lbs.
SG/SF
20 years old
George Mason
Potential BBS Ratings: B+ C+ C C+ C- A
McGahee was a prolific scorer in Baltimore's high school catholic league. During his senior season, he was named the Baltimore Sun's metro player of the year and earned All-State honors. Despite his numerous accolades, McGahee was perceived by high major programs as a 5'11" shooting guard that didn't have what it took to run the point. Despite his desire to be a Terp, he was spurned of a scholarship my the University of Maryland, who only offered him a chance to join the team as a walk-on. He received several offers from mid-majors such as GMU, VCU, and Towson. McGahee signed his L.O.I with the George Mason University. During the time period after he signed his L.O.I and arrived on campus in Fairfax, McGahee experienced a 5 inch growth spurt. He was already a fearless penetrator, but the added height only gave him a new found confidence in his ability to slash. McGahee had a spectacular freshman season, earning himself a spot on the 1st team All-CAA team while being honored as the CAA Freshman of the Year. Mason made it the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament under McGahee's leadership. He averaged 24.2 PPG, 2.7 APG, and 2.1 SPG on 45% shooting for the season. He is a leading candidate for the Naismith award this season, his sophomore year. He is expected to enter his name into this year's draft.
Stengths: Amazing slasher, comparable to John Wall and Derrick Rose. Often draws contact and is great at getting to the line. Despite being the primary ball handler for the Patriots, his turnovers were unusually low. Very stingy with the ball, great decision maker. Often ignites the break with his speed and quickness, reminiscent of Ty Lawson in that aspect. Plays the passing lanes very well, should be among the league leaders in steals at some point in his career. Feels comfortable pulling up from anywhere between 10-15 ft for a mid-range jumper. Effective at creating space between him and his defender, either with his body or off the dribble. Good cutter and plays well without the ball. Has been tested his whole career, whether it be on the competitive nation AAU circuit (McGahee played for Team Melo) or in the Baltimore Catholic League. Great leader and teammate.
Weaknesses: Struggles mightily with his outside shot. Shooting instructors say that he has sound mechanics, but he needs to slow down his release. Decent perimeter defender but he often gives up his position on defense to gamble for steals. Relies on his athleticism a bit too much on defense.
Overall, McGahee is a great prospect who should only improve. He has a great work ethic and he is still out to prove all the big time college basketball programs that passed on him wrong. Should be a top 5 pick.
