Strengths-Rob York is the best defender in college basketball. He won DPOY his sophomore season and is a clear favorite to win the award once more. With his dominating presence, opponents find it difficult getting anything done in the lane. He plays incredible help defense and guards the post so well that few teams bother going at him. He is also perhaps the best rebounder in the nation. He's got incredible strength and size and uses all of it. He's averaging 11 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks per contest this year, but his impact cannot be measured through stats alone, as he has neutralized every big man he's faced this year and shut down too many pick-and-rolls to count with his excellent quickness in rotating and overpowering smaller players.
Weaknesses- Offense. York can't score. He has the size, and he's quick with good feet, but York is an extremely awkward ballhandler with pretty awful hands at the rim. He's shooting 46% this year, but most of his baskets come off putbacks or open dunks. A lot of scouts think he can one day become a good scorer because he's not missing anything physically, but he is very uncomfortable playing with his back to the basket and has been thus far unable to develop a jump hook or any sort of post move. He's also a pretty poor shooter.
Overall- You're going to get a lot out of York, but it will all come on one end. He's going to be a dominant defender and a top-ten rebounder. Surprisingly, he isn't an incredible shotblocker, but he's a really smart defender that would rather alter a shot than leave his feet and get beat guessing for a block. He's so big and quick that he recovers even if he's fooled by a post move. Guards have a tough time shooting over him on drives because he's so willing to step up and intimidate them. He's not a scorer but he'll be a double-double player. Probably an All-League defender within a few seasons.
BBS Draft Projection- Top 5. The first guy who doesn't fixate on offense will realize he might be the best player in the draft. Big men with this kind of size and dominance are rare, so you hope the offense comes along and lock up a franchise player in this lockdown defender and great rebounder.
BBS Comparison- Darko Milicic all the way. He has this guy's game written all over him. Great rebounding, great positional defense. He'll give you worthwhile shotblocking and double-figures scoring, but it's the rebounding and positional defense that make York the next Darko.
Scout's take- He reminds me of Emeka Okafor coming out of college, but don't expect anywhere near the offensive output. I don't think he'll have a hard time guarding anyone in BBS. He's big, and a great athlete. He's a perfect system player. Plug him in at center, surround him with offense and you'll love what you get. He works hard on every play and owns the paint.
