The Dallas Mavericks will be entering the contract year for the first time in franchise history. Previous General Manager and coach, David Ezekiel Krupinski, once had the Mavericks among the elite of BBS on a consistent basis. Nearly 6+ seasons ago, this came all crashing down amidst a sex-scandal involving Krupinski and a few young men from the St. John's basketball team which lead to further developments that Krupinski was money-laundering. Commissioner Spencer forced his hand on Krupinski and the Dallas Mavericks, forcing the team to forfeit consecutive 1st round picks, restricted them from signing anyone in Free Agency, and were forced to find a home for many disgruntled and angry players. Krupinski amongst tears and apologies stated, "I regret my decisions, I'm sorry for the embarassment I caused to this franchise, to my family, my friends. This is not the way I would like to come out to the world, but yes I am gay." Krupinski is an activist for gay rights and is a proud-supporter of the first All-Gay college basketball team, St. John's.
After Commissioner Spencer and the league office cleaned up the mess that Krupinski made, a very controversial GM was called into duty. He was the former GM of the Memphis Grizzlies, Christian Martinez. Mr. Martinez was forced from his position by league office after they felt he was being a detriment to the team. Having a spat with the majority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, Daniel Spatan, he started making brash and unexplainable decisions. He was asked to step down and take a leave of abscence from the business.
The controversial Martinez who's known for speaking whatever on his mind was perhaps the perfect fit for this franchise, being re-built from the bottom up, Martinez always had a knack for picking out other's team's garbage and turning it into prized treasure. A current example is Xavier Henry who has improved season after season after many considered him to be one of the biggest busts in BBS history with the #3 pick.
Last season was a huge dissapointment for the Mavericks whom many expected would vie not only for a playoff spot but also perhaps among tops in the league. Individual statistics, the Mavericks had some of the best careers in their history among those were SF Xavier Henry, and the ressurrected Brandon Roy who played most of the year at PG and nearly averaged double digit assists for the year. Despite all this, the Mavericks finished with the third worst record in the league, but where there is darkness their is also light and the Mavericks landed the #1 pick in this years draft, they decided to fill a huge hold at the Center position by taking the 6'11 Leon Camby out of Depaul University. Camby is an excellent defender, with some offensive moves but although despite his strength and his athleticism he is not the best of rebounders, regardless he fills a gaping hole the MAvericks desperately missed last season
Martinez is now with his back against the wall, facing the dreaded contract year a first in Mavericks history. They've made the necessary steps to achieving their goals by draft Camby and by trading for veteran Elton Brand, who at 39 years of age is still a very serviceable big man and that is something the Mavericks desperately need.
Will the Mavericks avoid the Contract Year? Well, is Krupinski gay? Exactly.
