2018 BBS Draft Lottery Pick Grades
1. Dallas Mavericks - Leon Camby C 6'11'' 220 21 B D+ D B+ C+ A
Post-TC - Leon Camby C 21 6'11'' 220 B D+ D A- C+ A
Comments:While Camby didn't do anything spectacular in TC, he went up in arguably one of the more important categories for a Center, defense. He fills a huge hole the Mavericks had last season at the 5 and gives them some much needed defense. Should be a solid scorer as well.
Grade: B+
2. Toronto Raptors - Theo Finley SF 6'8'' 210 20 B- B- C+ B C- A
Post-TC - Theo Finley SF 20 6'8'' 210 B- B- B- B C- B
Comments: Similar to Camby, a bit of a disappointing TC for Theo Finley, perhaps even worse than Camby as Finley listed as a SF only went up in handles but went down in scouted potential. No reason to sound the alarm, but Finley doesn’t look as promising at the moment as we once thought. Toronto had an abundance of good players at the 2/3 already so this pick is surprising.
Grade: B-
3. New Orleans Hornets - Kristjan Hjartarsson SF 6'9'' 240 22 B C+ C C C+ A
Post-TC - Kristjan Hjartarsson SF 22 6'9'' 240 B C+ C C C+A
Comments: Perhaps the most disappointing of TCs for any rookie since perhaps Xavier Henry. Ironically both were chosen at the #3 spot, both play the same position, and both were touted as having great potential. Perhaps like Henry, Hjartarsson will need another TC or two to finally explode to the player we all expect. New Orleans gets a low grade for now, but I like Hjartarsson, he could have probably gone #1 if Dallas didn't have other needs.
Grade: B-
4. Seattle Supersonics - Ousmane Sembane - PG 6'3'' 207 21 C+ C- B- A- C A
Post-TC: Ousmane Sembene PG 216'3'' 207 B- C B- A C A
Comments: Seattle didn't have any huge needs so they went with the BPA available and drafted Ousmane Sembane. Sembane had probably the best TC of all rookies going in up in both scoring categories and defense. Sembane was heavily looked at with the #1 and #2 picks but both teams passed up on Sembane and perhaps now regret that decision. Sembane has plenty of time to develop behind 5-Time MVP Derrick Rose. A Rose / Sembane backcourt could be dangerous come next seaso.
Grade: A
5. Milwaukee Bucks - Austin Brock SG 6'8'' 200 19 B+ C D+ B- C A
Post TC - Austin Brock SG 19 6'8'' 200 B+ C D+ B+ C A
Comments: A bit of a surprising pick by the Bucks in choosing SG Austin Brock considering Duck Young-Bak, Action Jackson, and Iraere Ballantyne are already on the roster. Brock was BPA but perhaps Milwaukee should have looked into trading down out of this slot. Brock should be a solid interior scorer and could develop into a lock-down defender. Based off need, Milwaukee's grade takes a hit.
Grade: B
6. Boston Celtics(to Memphis to Orlando) - Thomas Edwards III C 6'11'' 230 18 C D- D+ B+ B- A
Post TC - C 18 6'11'' 230 C D- C- A- B A
Comments: The Boston Celtics chose to go with Thomas Edwards III with this pick and he didn't spend to long in Boston as he was quickly then shipped to Memphis for Blake Griffin. Memphis in turn shipped Thomas to the Magic. Edwards was billed as a defensive stopper coming out and his TC proves just that. He will be among league leaders in blocks for many years to come and should be a solid defender. I will give 2 grades and explanations.
Boston Celtics: C+(Boston did not need to pull the trigger and ship out most of their talent. They had plenty of time to re-build and should have continued adding pieces. They've basically dealt off most of their talent in order to acquire a 33 year old Lebron James. While LeBron is an incredibly addition to any team, LeBron can't be to happy to be struggling for a playoff spot all season long)
Orlando Magic: B (The Magic have been wheeling and dealing erratically all off-season but hopefully the Skillz-esque dealing has subsided and the Magic stick with this team. Edwards should step right in when Dwight Howard decides to call it quits.)
1. Dallas Mavericks - Leon Camby C 6'11'' 220 21 B D+ D B+ C+ A
