Jay-Z is NOT the first rapper to do a concept album. He's not even the best to do it. I don't really have a #1 because I don't quantify rappers like that. I think Tupac is probably the #1 of all time, because of his impact and because he basically embodies what modern rap is. But I think Biggie is a better rapper. I think Big is better than Jay-Z. I don't rank Nas at the top because I mean, he was doing songs like Oochie Wallie for a minute. Big L is a sick lyricist. Then I can't even comment on guys from the 80's and part of the early 90's because I wasn't around to assess their impact. Jay-Z is #1 solely based on longevity, creativity, and consistency. Jay-Z may not have been the first but not the best? Are you insane? Name one artist who has done a concept album like Jay-Z? Let alone just as good? You make statements but don't drop any names, kind of dumb. I don't get how you guys can't compare "American Gangster" to "Reasonable Doubt" both musically and lyrically, as well as conceptually. There are no "commercial hooks or singles" on this album and that to me is why it is such a success. The "Blueprint" album was a masterful experience, the beats are unmatched track to track, but lyrically they are no where near the caliber of "American Gangster" or "Reasonable Doubt." Take a listen to "Reasonable Doubt" and then "American Gangster" and see if track to track there is the same consistency in the classic "Reasonable Doubt" as in "American Gangster." Name any rapper who's put out albums in the past 5-6 years at the level of Jay-Z? No one. I was never a fan of Jay-Z, to be honest until recently, though there is no denying that Jay-Z has dominated all scenes of the hip-hop industry, hands-down. I can agree with most of this. The actual flow and story told from track to track in American Gangster is pretty sick. American Gangster was amazing lyrically and Jay-Z did a great job of linking the entire album. The Blueprint is still my favorite Jay-Z album though.

Lyrically, I don't think anyone can beat Nas. Impact wise and enjoyment wise I feel that Tupac was definitely the greatest of all tiime.
T.I.'s new album is sick and I would definitely consider him in the top 25 but longevity wise he shouldn't be put onto anyone's list.
Lil Wayne is crap and annoying.

no one's mentioned Lupe Fiasco, which is surprising.
Not top 10, yet, but he will get there.

I'm surprised Scarface isn't getting much love. He is the best southern rapper ever. Public Enemy/Chuck D was pretty nice. Slick Rick is pretty good. Busta Rhymes and Kurupt? Just a ton of rappers but most of them originated in the 80s/90s.

Yeah, I've been on the Lupe bandwagon for a while now. He's one of the best out there right now.

Name any rapper who's put out albums in the past 5-6 years at the level of Jay-Z? No one. # The Black Album (2003) Really good album, but Justify My Thug is not a good song. Threat and Moment of Clarity are okay, but no where near the level of the rest of the album. # Kingdom Come (2006) AVERAGE # American Gangster (2007) Solid album, the "return" of Jay-Z so to speak, but I obviously don't think of it as highly as others here. Pray is skippable, No Hook is skippable (to me at least), Blue Magic is fine for a radio song. Party Life is solid, it vibes, but he's corny as fuck on that track. You said that album had no radio singles, but thats exactly what Blue Magic and I Know were. Roc Boys DEFINTELY was, despite it being a hot song. I'll have to get back to you on the concept albums thing. They've been less common mainstream, unless you want to count Lupe's The Cool.

Little Brother 's "The Minstrel Show" is probably the only concept album to be able to rival "American Gangster." Then there's I Phantom by Mr. Lif and all the Kool Keith albums.

"The Cool" a concept album? Are you serious? LMAO Which is why I said, "unless you want to count Lupe's The Cool". The album has a concept, albeit a very loose one. Even American Gangster isn't a full blown concept album. I mean, it all has songs dealing with the "Gangster" type of lifestyle, but so does The Chronic. It's not like a Masta Ace "A Long Hot Summer", but I'll still call it somewhat of a conceptual album. "Jay-Z is #1 solely based on longevity, creativity, and consistency" If you're basing it on that, then I can't see how Tupac isn't #1. The only real thing Jay-Z has on Tupac is lyrical ability, and Jay-Z was never the best lyricist in the game. Oh, and Jay-Z was able to make fresh music because he didn't die. Rather than list who I think is the greatest of all time, the artists I think are some of the best out and I currently listen to are: DMX (Pre-Meltdown) Mystikal (Pre-Jail) Nas Lupe Fiasco Outkast (especially Andre 3000) Redman Little Brother Joe Budden (Probably the most underrated rapper out) Royce Da 5'9" Kanye (College Dropout/Late Registration) Ghostface Killah Jadakiss Juvenile Eminem Common The Cool Kids Dr. Dre (Classic material) Big L (One of the best lyricists I've ever heard)

Nas is the best lyricist and my personal all time favorite.
Jay-Z is probably the consensus all time best rapper alive/ever.
Love Kanye, but don't really consider him a rapper so to speak.
Tupac was great, All Eyez on Me was an amazing album.
If you don't love Lil Wayne you aren't human.
