In lieu of Eboner's recent excel analysis of teams success, I have decided to do a GM Rankings Article.
2017 GM Rankings:
1. Outlawz--While we may have had a disagreement, there is no argument here. The Knicks have won 3 titles, been to 5 finals, and always seem to be in the mix of things come playoff time. Outlawz assembled the best team in BBS history last year with Derrick Rose, Luol Deng, and Andrew Bynum and looks to have a team that will be perennial contenders.
2. Ebener--The Heat have had consistent success for a long time, and currently have one of the best young cores in the league, Eboner's 2 titles and 3 final appearances give him the # 2 slot on the rankings, despite consistently making poor efforts at Atlanta's own Michael Beasley!
3. CJ--Cj has been one of the most consistent gm's in the league, making the playoffs an astounding 13 times and boasting a ring and 2 fi While there is no clear cut # 3, consistent regular season and playoff success give CJ the nod.
4. Mark--Another GM that has consistently been winning, Mark has put together some excellent teams in the past. While only appearing (and winning) in one finals, the Nets have often been considered a top team so that number is almost surprising. With a whole new core in KD, Darko, Gerald Green, and Conley, Mark has caught some of the trade bug recently. Especially in the restructured East, the Nets should continue their playoff streak.
5. Aar--It took Aar a little bit to get going in BBS, but his team right now is sick. Favors and Fisher is quite a combo, and complement those two with D.J, Augustin. Manchu Chau, and Sven Andersson and you've got a team. 12 playoff appearances and 2 finals appearances is impressive, and although considered hard to trade with by some, Aar is not afraid to pull out a blockbuster either.
6. Nanz--It was hard for me to put Nanz here because Is still view him as a rookie for some reason, but his success doesn't lie. The Lakers have been in the playoffs 8 out of the last 9 years and have put together some excellent teams as well.
7. Basone--I don't think Dan is the 7th best GM in the league, but you can't really rank a guy any lower who has won 2 straight titles: an amazing feat. Currently in his contract year, Basone doesn't look to have his "swag" back, and recently made a bad trade for LaMarcus Aldridge.
8. Maniac--Another tough choice here, but I think Maniac deserves it. Despite his only title coming from Will's team, the 76ers have enjoyed consistent success for a long time. While they didn't make the playoffs this year, they have (i think) the best player in the league and a nice core. Maniac could have probably done more to put the Wall-Derozan-Blair team into contention, but it's hard to argue with their success. Also almost impossible to trade with.
9. Habes--While the Magic's success has not been consistent, Habes has put some good teams together in the past and probably has his best team right now. Never afraid to make a huge trade, the Magic have been to the playoffs 10 times and the finals once. If they keep their core in tact, they might be a title contender soon enough
10. Justin--Despite being relatively new, Jay has done a nice job with the Pistons. A consistent high 40 win team, the Pistons are finally enjoying playoff success and have a unique core. A proven winner in NBN as well, Justin could climb up this list in the future.
11. Ducky--It's a joke that Ducky is this high, but I guess you can't argue with the success. Ducky's approach in every league has always been formulaic: tank and rebuild, then try to contend with a team that is not quite good enough. Only this time, the latter stage took forever because he got his hands on Dwight. Ducky might even be more complacent than JAH, but it's impossible to argue with 14 playoff appearances and 2 finals appearances at that.
12. Play--Besides his proficiency with hammers, Play is also a skilled GM who has a great ability to produce sick cores. I've never seen Play not rebuild before he tries to compete though, which is why his wins are low.
13. JAH--Always has been a good but not great gm who isn't interested enough to make his team great. I've never seen him make a trade offer. Will always be the 6th-8th seed in the East.
14. 'Skillz--Trades too much, sometimes makes good deals, often makes bad deals. Has been better since coming back (4 playoff appearances in 6 years), and has assembled a nice core and should have consistent success in the West.
15. Andrew--Could eventually climb this list, and has actually assembled a really nice team. Sometimes hard to trade with, though, and saying "I'm interested in this trade, but i'm torn, so i'm going to ask Spencer," is not something a top quality gm would do!
16. Pig--When he's interested, he's good. Right now he's not interested, so he's a bad GM. Went the veteran route in his contract year which killed his team.
17. Dj--Always seems to have a nice core of players but never seems to compete. This year was his best year in a while, as the Sidney trade now looks like a complete rape. He needs to surround his stars and get some veteran talent rather than staying a 45 win team and developing youth.
18. Galo--A solid GM who I have to give props to for probably the best article in sim league history. Has never really had a great, team though, and remains a middle of the pack GM.
19. Greg--Did an absolutely incredible job escaping the contract year with no pieces and has done a decent job since then grabbing small pieces and assembling a winning team with virtually no assets. I forgot what he did, but it had to be Greg's own fault that he had no assets in the first place.
20. Nova--Nova has the least amount of wins in BBS history, less than even the Hornets even, but is actually a pretty solid GM. Still, being in your contract year twice is not impressive, as Nova seems to follow the same pattern throughout his tenure: 2 years of tanking, one year of unsuccessfully trying to get 40, and 3 years of competing. His team looks solid now, so hopefully he can sustain it.
21. Blue--Poor regular season success, Blue has also been affected by bad luck. He always seems to have an awesome young core, but has to dismantle it because of the contract year. He currently has a lot of assets in Dunnagan, Bradley, Jatoba, a top 10 pick, and good wings so he should be able to be a perennial contender if he makes the right moves
22. Ashes--Has gone pretty much under the radar but has done a solid job in his few seasons as GM. Made some nice moves to compete, and will remain a contender int he West.
23. Chris--Did an awful job with the Grizzlies, but has returned and done an excellent jobs with the Mavericks so far. While he was given a pretty easy rebuilding effort, he has managed to get some great picks and has a sick core.
24. Allstar--Is an okay GM when he's interested, which he seems to be now, but has never put a contender on the floor. Not winning 50 games in 14 seasons is sad, as is allstar's frequent activity lags in which he doesn't seem to be interested in his team.
25. Scott--A good BBS gm that has suffered from poor activity. Currently in his contract year, Scott needs to make some moves, so it should be interesting to see if his old success returns. He will climb up this list if his activity returns to where it once was.
26. Derwin--A GM with potential, but still pretty much a rookie. Has made some nice moves, but has compounded them with worse trades (i.e. trading Davidson and picks for worse players). Signings of Ibaka and Conley were once criticized, but actually look excellent now. Will be a good GM one day, but isn't there yet.
27. C.C.--New GM that has done a pretty average job. Can't really tell yet.
28. Steve--No idea who this guy is, but he's got to be better than JB!
30. JB--Easily the worst GM in the league. Can't communicate coherently, doesn't know how to make decisions (initially declining dunleavy), makes bad trades, etc. Funniest thing i've ever seen, JB trying to play hardball:
"ITs the 13th pick still good first and its not moving
2 forfeited first makes the pick more valuable
Not sending that
you want PP make it worth it for me. Not me making it worth it for you."
